The Spartans, the lowest seeded team in the North Division 2 bracket, nearly erased a 3-0 deficit before falling to the Wildcats by a 5-2 margin.
The Stoneham boys hockey team easily outshot defending state champion Wilmington. But unfortunately for the Spartans, they couldn't outscore the Wildcats. While Stoneham, the No. 14 seed in the North Division 2 bracket, fell behind 3-0 in the opening period, the Spartans peppered Wilmington goalie Drew Foley with shots before slicing the deficit to 3-2 early in the third period. Foley was up to the task, saving 36 shots out of the 38 he faced. Stoneham goalie Bobby Giordano made several critical saves of his own during the game, but Wilmington added an empty net goal with 26 seconds left before closing out the game with another tally with 6.5 seconds left to seal a 5-2 win. The loss ended Stoneham's season at 7-10-4 while Wilmington …

Here's a round up of recent Stoneham High School sports action.
It was a critical week for a pair of Stoneham athletic teams, with two Spartan units earning confidence boosting results. Girls basketball goes 1-1 on the week Head coach Sara Mills’ charges didn’t get the week off to a great start in a tilt against perennial powerhouse Reading. The Rockets went on to a 64-34 victory despite 12 points from Sam Trant, eight points from Olivia Gaughan and five markers from Grace Macura. Junior Stephanie Bramante and Britney Fucci each did an outstanding job covering top Reading threat Olibia Healey, according to Mills. “All in all we just lost to a better team,” said Mills. Things got better on Friday in a tilt with Woburn, which the Spartans won by a 54-37 decision. Macura led the way with 17 points, Trant …

The local All-Stars won their third consecutive District Championship earlier this week.
The Stoneham Junior League All-Stars have won the District 13 Championship for the third consecutive year earlier this week. Manager Dave Harrington and assistant coaches Matt Pitts and Joe Herzog have been in the dugout for the Spartans calling the shots. The team bounced North Reading out of a best-of-three series, advancing to play Canton in the Sectional round where the Spartans narrowly lost, 11-10. “They scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win,” Harrington said. “Final score was 11-10, but we hung with them and their hitting was too strong. They were feeling confident coming off a 26-0 win over East Boston. We were down early and fought back and gave ourselves a chance to win. We just couldn’t hold it.” Harrington …
