Mark Kerrigan's attorney told a judge in court that the conditions of his probation were too much of a financial burden according to the Boston Herald.
The Boston Herald reports that Stoneham native Mark Kerrigan, Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother, has been denied his request to return to prison and serve out the remainder of his sentence after being released a little more than a week ago. His attorney told the judge that the terms of his probation are too much of a financial burden, the Herald reported, and that Kerrigan would rather go back to jail than deal with the terms of his release, which included alcohol counseling, anger management classes and mental health counseling. Mark Kerrigan has asked to serve out the remainder of his sentence after his early release a little more than a week ago.
The Boston Herald reports that Stoneham native Mark Kerrigan, Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother, has asked to return to prison to serve out the remainder of his sentence after being released a little more than a week ago. Probation Department spokeswoman Coria Holland told the Herald that if Kerrigan returned to prison, it would release him from special conditions of his early release. Kerrigan, 47, had been serving his 2 1/2 year sentence at Middlesex House of Correction before his release on July 27 if scheduled to appear in Middlesex Superior Court tomorrow on his request to serve the remaining six-to-eight months of his sentence, the Herald reported. The Commonwealth's case against Mark Kerrigan, Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan's brother, came to an end Thursday after a Massachusetts judge sentenced the Stoneham native to the maximum sentence of 2 1/2 years in County jail, with six months suspended. Superior Court Judge S. Jane Haggerty ruled on the side of the prosecution, as Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Keeley recommended Mark Kerrigan serve the maximum sentence—2 1/2 years in the House of Correction. The 46-year-old Stoneham native and brother of Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is scheduled for sentencing at 9 a.m. Thursday in Middlesex County Superior Court.
After 15 hours of deliberation, the 12-person jury acquitted Mark Kerrigan of involuntary manslaughter and guilty on a simple assault and battery charge shortly before noon Wednesday in Middlesex County Superior Court in Woburn. Juror no. 30, who served as the floor person, announced the verdict, which was unanimous. Mark Kerrigan's Attorney Janice Bassil requested at least 24 hours to prepare for sentencing and Judge S. Certainly, there is a reason why Mr. Mark Kerrigan received the maximum 2 1/2 year sentence. Because it was the best the judge could do ! No person, whether drunk, or otherwise, has the right to place as much as a finger on another human being. The only exception being self defense.
