Memorial Day BBQ? 8 Money-Saving Tricks (Sponsored)

Who’s not planning a BBQ this weekend? If the weather holds and you’ve got propane or charcoal, chances are, you’re grilling something with your friends and family. Here, new ideas for keeping your costs down. Sponsored by Home Depot.

Here at Patch, we like to be thrifty, so we talked to two barbeque experts and uncovered some really good ideas to help you save money on your next outdoor party.   1. Start with a marinade. This means planning ahead -- say, Friday. But it’s worth it, says Rick Browne, host of Barbeque America on PBS, because you can pass up that well-marbled ribeye steak and buy a less tender and less expensive choice to grill like a flank steak or chuck steak. Just marinate it or brine for one or two days and then cook long and slow on the barbeque grill to break down tissues but maintain moisture. “You need to include an acid in the marinade, perhaps juice, vinegar or soy sauce, but avoid cola which is so acidic it can turn meat into a soggy mess.” Try…

Lots of Love Cat Rescue's Pet of the Week

Will You Befriend Merlot the Cat?

Merlot needs a home. Will it be yours?

[Editor's note: The following column was submitted by Lots of Love Cat Rescue.] Just look at this gorgeous face. Merlot is our movie star cat, with her attention-seeking ways, even in the midst of another cat's photo shoot, here comes Merlot to block the camera’s view. At about one year old, sweet Merlot is on the small side, all black with a dab of white on her chest, her thick sable-like coat can be addictive to the touch. Whenever the opportunity arises, Merlot seeks out a lap, just wanting to be near. Her story: She entered into a cat trap meant for another, was not spayed and nobody claimed her. Merlot is comfortable with being picked up and will approach even strangers for attention. We get a sense she wasn’t handled a lot because …

Louise Needs a Caring Home

Will you adopt Louise?

[Editor's note: The following column was submitted by Lots of Love Cat Rescue.] As the temperature drops and winter takes its frigid hold, cat rescue people don’t sleep well. We hear the wind whipping and worry about the homeless kittens and cats outside. We find comfort in cats like Louise, ones we are able to rescue due to a kind soul who spotted a mom and kittens and never gave up finding help. The owner never spayed their cat, instead moved and left her behind. So Louise and her siblings were born in a condo complex environment, behind a tall fence in a tangled patch of forest, seeking shelter in the crevices of a cliff.   Rescued at three months old, Louise’s foster mom has done a wonderful job of showing her that people represent …

A Divine Dessert: Kelly's Almost Heaven in a Bowl

Five simple ingredients blend together to create a dessert that is truly amazing.

"Health food may be good for the conscience but Oreos taste a hell of a lot better." ~Robert Redford My friends and I, collectively known as The BBs, got together last weekend to catch up and catch our breath as this holiday season got into full swing. Each of us brought a little something to nosh on (I brought my Mini Macs) and we had a great afternoon filled with laughs, good eats and a very tame Yankee Swap. All of us agreed though, that the highlight of the afternoon was Kelly's dessert, aptly named "Almost Heaven in a Bowl." It was the best dessert I had tasted in a good long while. It was so good, in fact, that I made it two days later at home and my guys devoured it. (I may have eaten a bit of it, too.) This is sweet treat is so …

Study Shows Women Call the Shots at Home

According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, 43 percent of men don’t have the final say in any of the major household decisions

A study shows women may have more control over their relationship than they think. According to a study conducted by the Pew Research Center, a surprising 43 percent of men don’t have the final say in any of the major household decisions tested. The survey asked questions about who makes decisions in four areas:  household finances, weekend activities, large home purchases and television viewing.     According to the survey, only a quarter of men make decisions in more areas than their female partner. In 31 percent of the relationships, the pair split decision-making responsibilities equally. Does this sound like your family? Who's the boss in your house? French Onion Soup: Slow Cooker-Style

French Onion Soup is delicious and easy when you make it in the slow cooker.

“You will find this to be a more oniony soup than the usual kind but, as the cross old lady said when a stranger told her that her slip was showing, "I like it that way.” ~Margaret Yardley Potter I think of French Onion Soup as the Rocky Balboa of soups. It is an enduring favorite, it has bite and it may be basic, but it definitely has depth. You can envision it going a few rounds with Apollo Creed's Beef Stew. But seriously, French Onion Soup is that perennial favorite that we love to order in restaurants as an appetizer but seldom actually try to make at home. In all the years that I have been cooking the first time I tried to make it was last weekend, when I decided to try my hand at a slow cooker version. I have just one thing to say. …
