Call it a Draw: Stoneham, Belmont Finish in 1-1 Tie

The Stoneham High School boys' soccer team tallied a late goal to even the score against the Marauders of Belmont High on Sept. 10.

A header by Seamus Landers with 10 minutes remaining gave Stoneham High School a hard-earned 1-1 tie with host Belmont High on Saturday, Sept. 10. Landers' goal, assisted by a centering pass by Bradley Fagan, cancelled out a Christian Raymond strike in the first 10 minutes of the game that gave Belmont an early lead. Raymond's goal was assisted by James Cameron. In the second match of the season for both teams, Belmont (1-0-1) – which defeated Watertown, 3-1, earlier in the week – and Stoneham (0-1-1) each had opportunities to score as Stoneham had a clean break away and Belmont took several swipes at the ball inside the six meter box. But in each case, the goaltenders – Sam Bragg for Belmont and Stoneham's Devin McCarthy – came up big to …

The Stoneham High School softball team won a pair of games this week, while both tennis teams failed to pick up a win.

With rain postponing two days of sports this week, it was a daunting task trying to find makeup dates for those games.  But on the few days that the sun did shine, the Stoneham High School softball team made the most of its opportunity to take the field.  The Spartans started the week off with a bang, beating visiting Reading Memorial High 5-4 Monday to improve to 5-2. The win proved to be the biggest of the year for Stoneham, who handed the Rockets their first loss of the season.  Things looked bleak from the start, as Reading put up three runs against Stoneham pitcher Nicolette DelVecchio in the first. But the Spartans answered back with three runs of their own, followed by two more in the fifth. DelVecchio allowed just one more run on …

Stoneham Remains Undefeated After Thumping Belmont, 64-38

The Stoneham High School girls' basketball team improved their record in Middlesex League play to 7-0 following their Tuesday night victory over the Belmont Marauders in Stoneham.

STONEHAM — It was just another day at the office for Spartans coach Angela Billings and the Stoneham High School girls' basketball squad, as they took care of business Tuesday night on their home floor by beating the Belmont Marauders, 64-38. The Spartans (7-0), who are 9-0 overall and 6-0 at home this season, and Marauders battled in the opening quarter. Stoneham held a five-point lead after the first, 13-8.   Neither team had a particularly great night shooting the basketball, but the difference in the game was the second effort, second chance points the Spartans were able to generate. “I stressed offensive rebounding before the game and second chance points," Billings said. "I told them to pound the boards and good things will come of …

The Stoneham High School boys' basketball team defeated the Belmont Marauders, 62-49, Tuesday night in Stoneham.

STONEHAM — The Stoneham High School boys' basketball team quickly forgot the pounding they took by Lexington last Friday and proved they can win in the Middlesex League by defeating the Belmont Marauders, 62-49, Tuesday night on their home floor. The defensive intensity from the get-go was the story of the night for the Spartans. They were forcing turnovers early and often as well as not missing a beat on their rotations on the defensive end, taking the Marauders (2-5) out of their game mentally on the offensive end. “Our goal was to keep the ball out of their primary scorer’s hands and double the ball screens," said Spartans coach Paul Tanglis. "We played terrific defense and it really got us going early on." The Spartans and Marauders …
