Readers Support Skating Rink, Winter Carnival Initiatives

Stoneham Patch readers agreed that the proposed skating rink and winter carnival should be set up in town during the winter.

Not a single reader opposed town proposals that would bring a skating rink and a winter carnival to Stoneham during the winter. On Aug. 29, we asked you if you supported the winter activities proposed by Stoneham Board of Selectman Tom Boussy and of the several comments we received all were in favor of the projects. "I think the idea sounds great, a nice ice skating rink on the Common and a Winter Carnival such fun!" wrote reader Jean Beltram. "We need some fun things to do in the winter." Fellow reader Tara L concurred, saying: "This would absolutely benefit the town and I hope it moves forward!" Reader Rob Carfagnini wrote in, saying: "I think it's a great idea! I think you would see a lot of residents utilize the rink as it's great to …

Hi Dennis, The financials haven't been determined for the winter carnival because it's basically just an idea with no formal proposal. The skating rink would cost a total of about $5,200. No word yet on potential revenue from either. The activities will be discussed at the next Selectmen's meeting later this month.   more ›

Should the Town Have a Winter Carnival and Ice Skating Rink?

Tell us your thoughts by posting a comment in the comments section below.

With the Stoneham Board of Selectmen considering a few activities to bring to the Town Common this winter, we'd like to know: Should the town have a winter carnival and ice skating rink? Do you think these activities would be beneficial to the community? Or should the town skip them and focus on other winter initiatives or activities? Let us know by posting a comment in the comments section below.

Hey Stoneham—with this "Stick Your Camera Out the Window Art Project," we're hoping to create a mosaic that documents what this storm looks like all over the town of Stoneham. But we need your help. Please take your camera or cellphone, stick it out a window or doorway and take a photo or a video. Then upload it to this article. You can sign in with your Stoneham Patch account or your Facebook account. It's easy, just click the "Add" link below the photos and follow the directions. Be sure to include a caption for your photo that lets others know where the photo was taken. The more specific you are the better, but simply mentioning the roadway in Stoneham is fine too. Let's have some fun with this and see what we can create together. Stay…

Ski Club Has Local Roots

Skidaddlers Ski and Sports Club may have its lodge in Bartlett, NH, but it was founded more than 50 years ago in Stoneham and most of its current membership resides in Massachusetts.

Tim Bowers joined the "Stoneham" Skidaddlers Ski and Sports Club five years ago, thinking he could find fellow companions to ski with and enjoy the outdoors. Little did he know  he'd find much more within the group, including a position on the Board of Directors and a steady girlfriend. "Many people come just for the company and to go skiing," said Bowers. "The Club is for people who have like-minded interests. We're all skiers, kayakers, and outdoorsy types." During his first two years with the Club, Bowers was the lodge manager, which is a position that answers to the Board of Directors, enforces rules in the lodge, orders supplies and handles other matters related to the Club. In his third year with the Club, he was elected by the Board…
