The former Navy SEAL and the longtime Congressman will face off June 25 to fill John Kerry's former U.S. Senate seat.
A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later. Boston.com is reporting an early salvo has been fired in what could be the Senate special election showdown.
In a radio interview Wednesday morning, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown (R-MA) jabbed at Democratic Congressman Edward Markey about his residency in Malden, according to a Boston.com report. Brown questioned if Markey, who represents Stoneham, still lives in Massachusetts and also told WTKK-FM he often sees members of the Bay State congressional delegation on plane trips home but said "I have never seen Ed on the airplane—ever," according to the report. Markey spokeswoman Giselle Barry responded in an email to Patch Wednesday, saying, "Scott Brown has not yet announced that he is running for Senate, but he is already launching false, personal attacks from the sidelines. With news that Sen. John Kerry may be tapped as the Obama White House's nominee for Secretary of State, Markey said he will "seriously consider" making a run if the vacancy is announced.
Congressman Ed Markey told reporters he was "seriously considering" a run for Senate, should Sen. John Kerry be tapped as President Barack Obama's nominee for secretary of state. Markey, who represents Stoneham, made the remarks to reporters at Malden City Hall, following a press conference regarding the city's proposed minor league baseball park. "I hope that John Kerry does become secretary of state; he will be a great secretary of state," Markey said. "When that announcement is made I will seriously consider looking at ... (the seat). The Somerville congressman told WCVB he wasn't sure if Sen. Scott Brown would run, or win, if Sen. John Kerry leaves the Senate to accept a cabinet position.
Representative Michael Capuano told WCVB he would "consider" running for Senate if Sen. John Kerry leaves the legislative body to join President Barack Obama's cabinet. That said, Capuano told the TV station, "I can't deal the cards," and that he wasn't officially "planning anything." If Kerry, who was first elected to the Senate in 1984, joined Obama's cabinet, it could lead a number of prospective candidates to consider running for his seat. Among those possible candidates would be Republican Sen. Scott Brown, who recently lost a bid for reelection to Elizabeth Warren. Indian claim stirs outrage among some Patch readers against US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.
The controversy over US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren's claim to be part Native American is not going over well with Patch readers in the Greater Boston area, according to an unscientific Patch poll. As of Thursday morning 52 percent of the 304 Patch readers who took our unscientific poll said they believe US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is more of a hypocrite than incumbent Republican US Senator Scott Brown.
