Officers needed to remain at locations where roadways were blocked by trees with live electrical wires entangled for hours at a time on Monday, according to Stoneham Police Chief Jim McIntyre.
The town's dispatch center was lighting up during the peak hours of Hurricane Sandy Monday, as officers responded to several dozen calls for service, according to Stoneham Police Chief Jim McIntyre. Prior to Hurricane Sandy hitting Stoneham, McIntyre said, "Storm preparation was getting our vehicles in order and lining up additional staffing. During the height of the storm (Monday) night, we had eight officers responding to calls." During the peak period (2:30 p.m. to midnight), the dispatch center fielded 61 calls for service involving trees and wires down, building alarms and medical assistance calls, according to McIntyre. If storm takes more northern track, significant impacts possible to New England.
The latest track of Hurricane Sandy has the storm pushing farther west according to this morning’s meteorologist reports. The National Hurricane Center has the center of the storm going either into Southern New Jersey or Delaware. This is a constantly changing storm and a more northern track, which is possible, would bring more significant impacts into New England. According to WHDH Meteorologist Chris Lambert, the current likely scenario would bring wind and rain Monday afternoon through Tuesday with wind gusts of 40-60 mph, mostly onshore, strongest at coast with up to 5 inches of rain expected throughout the storm’s duration. Power outages are likely, along with beach erosion and coastal flooding during high tides. Lambert says it’s …

Two to five inches of snow is possible.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Middlesex County, including Stoneham. The storm, which may stretch from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning, could dump two to five inches of snow on the area. NWS predicted the storm will be a mix of rain and snow. Leaves on the trees coupled with heavy wet snow may cause branches to break with power outages possible. NWS is also predicting strong northeast winds. “The potential for heavy impact with this early season winter storm is possible. Heavy wet snow could cause hazardous driving conditions as well as widespread power outages,” reported the NWS.
