Stoneham Elementary Redistricting Committee Produces Interim Report

The committee released the interim redistricting report on Nov. 29.

The Stoneham Elementary Redistricting Committee recently released an interim redistricting report related to the Middle School project, according to the Stoneham Public Schools website. The 13-member committee released the interim redistricting report on Nov. 29. The report provides an overview as to why redistricting is necessary and some of the potential changes that may be on the horizon. Why Redistrict? In 2012 at a Stoneham Special Town Meeting, voters approved the estimated $40 million Middle School project, which involves converting the existing Central Elementary School into the Central Middle School for grades 5-8, according to the report. Construction to Resume at Stoneham Middle-Central School Site

Construction at the Stoneham Middle-Central School site is expected to resume Oct. 29, according to a press statement from Superintendent Les Olson's office.

Construction at the Stoneham Middle-Central School site is expected to resume Oct. 29, according to a press statement from Superintendent Dr. Les Olson's office. "At its Oct. 22 meeting, the School Building Committee approved a contract with Shawmut Design and Construction for the next phase of the Middle/Central School construction project," reads the statement "This phase will include the relocation of site utilities and the installation of Geo-Piers to stabilize the underlying soils prior to the commencement of actual foundation work and construction next spring. "This current phase of construction will begin around Oct. 29 and is scheduled to be finished in December." Demolition of the aging middle school building began in late August …

Pomeworth Street will become one-way during the Stoneham Middle School construction project, according to town officials.

Pomeworth Street will become one-way during the Stoneham Middle School construction project, according to town officials. Effective Monday, Pomeworth Street will be one-way from William Street eastbound toward Washington Street from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, according to the Stoneham Public Schools website. "Parking on Pomeworth Street during these hours will be allowed on the south (right) side of the street (along the Old Central School) while student drop-off will be on the north (left) side of the street so that students do not need to cross the street after leaving a car," read the website. Worker Trapped in Roof Collapse at Stoneham Middle School Demolition Site Not Injured

A worker briefly trapped at the demolition site at the middle school freed himself and wasn't injured during the incident Tuesday afternoon, according to project staff.

A worker briefly trapped at the demolition site at the Stoneham Middle School freed himself and wasn't injured during the incident Tuesday afternoon, according to project staff. Around 12:30 p.m. there was a small roof collapse, but the male worker wasn't injured during the incident, according to Stoneham School Building Committee chairwoman Jeanne Craigie. The worker was assessed and was fine, declining transport to a nearby hospital, according to Stoneham Fire Chief Joseph Rolli. Rolli discussed his team's response to the incident. "We have three firefighters on detail whenever a building is being demolished and part of the reason is because something like this could happen," Rolli said. Stoneham Middle School Demolition Gets Underway [PHOTOS]

Demolition work kicked off at 7 a.m. Monday.

The walls of the aging Stoneham Middle School came crumbling down Monday morning, as demolition work got underway at the site. From 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Essex Newbury North Construction demolished the technology wing and gym section of the middle school, according to Timothy Hurdelbrink, vice president of operations and project executive for Boston-based Shawmut Design and Construction. Shawmut hired the Haverhill construction firm to handle the demolition project. "We're happy with the progress," Hurdelbrink said Monday night following a Stoneham School Committee session at the High School. I'm a farely new resident here. I guess I'm glad my 6th grader goes to Catholic school (out of town) so he doesn't have to deal with all the construction and safety concerns brought about by thi.s. Demolition should have happaned back in July when school was out. Any upgrades to the High School in the next couple of years?   more ›
