Of the 42 votes we received, Market Basket and the Christmas Tree Shop finished tied for first with five votes each, followed by a movie theater with three and a grocery store, Ikea, Walmart, Target and Starbucks finishing third with two votes apiece. With limited grocery store options in Stoneham, readers want a place like Market Basket to open in town. "MARKET BASKET! For the love of Mary someone needs to occupy the former Shaw's location and Market Basket would be IDEAL!" wrote reader Jillian. Reader Witold added: "I agree about the Market Basket. Those local businesses near …

+1 on Chunky's. The town also needs a grocery choice other than MB or S&S. If you want to shop MB, drive your car practically an exit down 95 either way. Trader Joe's would be best but Hannaford isn't a bad choice. Although they are more expensive than MB, they are that way b/c they have a healthier selection.   more ›

Construction going on in the former Lindt Factory Outlet location. Anyone hear anything about what's going on there? I won't hold my breath for something to move into the old Shaw's building. I go to Shaw's in Wakefield. It's nice and spacious, therefore better-equipped to handle large crowds, and several people who worked at the Stoneham location are now there. Stop & Shop is always a zoo. …   more ›

VISIONS FOR VACANCIES: What Should Be Done with the Former Shaw's Supermarket?

We'll feature a vacant property in town and ask you, our readers, to tell us what you'd like to see done with it.

Empty storefronts aren't an uncommon finding in most communities these days and Stoneham is no exception. So, with that in mind we'll be featuring a different vacant business in town, and you can let us know what you'd like to see done with the building or property. Our first property is one that comes up in discussion quite a bit in town and that concerns the former Shaw's Supermarket, 109 Main St. The store shuttered about a year ago due to lagging sales in comparison to other Shaw's locations. What are your thoughts about this location? Should another grocery store or chain move in? Would you put a restaurant or entertainment space there? Tell us your visions for the property in the comments section below.
