Expect mostly rain in the city and snow outside of 495.
A nor'easter will kick up winds and rain in the region Wednesday, with sleet and snow likely west of Boston and in the higher elevations. According to WHDH meteorologist Chris Lambert, the precipitation should start between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., which would impact the afternoon commute. Atmospheric conditions may convert falling rain into snow in Boston, though that would mean merely a dusting on grass before quickly melting away. The actual rain/snow line is harder to predict. "I don't expect much, if any accumulation in the Boston area, maybe a slushy coating around Rte. 128 on grassy surfaces as rain and snow battle it out for a few hours in the early evening," wrote Lambert on the 7 Weather Blog. Damaging wind gusts and localized flooding possible Friday afternoon into the evening.
Strong to severe thunderstorms could develop later this afternoon into the evening, the National Weather Service (NWS) warned on Friday morning. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across southern New England by mid-afternoon ahead of an approaching cold front, the NWS said in a statement. A few thunderstorms may become severe, with the primary threat coming from damaging wind gusts, the NWS said, and heavy rainfall could also lead to isolated flooding. "The storms should initially develop in the interior by 2 or 3 p.m., moving toward the coast by early evening," the NWS statement read. The Stoneham High School baseball squad will play their second-round playoff game against Lynnfield at 1 p.m. at Lynnfield Sunday, June 3.
Mother Nature played its own game Saturday, as the rain led to the postponement of the Stoneham-Lynnfield baseball matchup in the second round of the state tournament. The playoff game, which was supposed to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lynnfield, has been pushed back to 1 p.m. Sunday, June 3. Stoneham advanced to the second round of the tournament thanks to a 11-6 victory over Madison Park in the preliminary round this week.

A wintry mix could make the Thursday morning commute difficult for drivers, and Massachusetts State Police are asking commuters to be cautious on the roadways.
