The campaign committee called “Koutoujian for Congress” allows the candidate to raise money for a campaign and hire campaign staff.
Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced Thursday that he is opening a Congressional campaign committee account. The move is a serious indication that Koutoujian will run for U.S. Congress if Congressman Edward Markey wins the U.S. Senate special election next month. "I have dedicated my life to working on issues important to the people I have been honored to represent as a legislator and now as Sheriff. If given the opportunity, I intend to fight for the people of the 5th Congressional district as their representative in Washington," said Koutoujian. "Throughout my career, I have focused on guaranteeing access to quality, affordable health care, enacting common sense measures to strengthen our economy, ensuring public …

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian and Andover Democratic State Senator Barry Feingold propose bill based on existing state drug and human trafficking laws.
Newly-proposed legislation in Massachusetts could set the stage for certain sexual predators in the state to have their assets seized. According to an announcement from Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, he and State Senator Barry Feingold, an Andover Democrat, have proposed the bill, said to be modeled on existing state controlled substance and human trafficking laws. The announcement also comes in the spotlight of the ongoing John Burbine child sex abuse case. Burbine, a former Wakefield resident, is facing more than 100 counts of child sex abuse—including victims from Stoneham—stemming from his work at his wife's one-time illegal daycare business. The legislation would allow, with court permission, for items such as cameras, cell …

Stoneham Police officers spent last week using the Middlesex Sheriff's Mobile Training Center, a trailer that tests officers' skill with both their firearm and decision-making using pre-recorded video scenarios.
Two police officers have their guns drawn, cautiously moving down the high school hallway as they check doors after a report of a man with a gun inside the school. Suddenly a crowd of students comes running around the corner, with the officers telling everyone to show their hands up, and just as suddenly the gunman turns around the corner. The officers yell for the man to drop his weapon, but he fires, and the officers return fire. That harrowing and sadly familiar sounding situation—and other intense scenarios involving firearms—took place in a virtual training last week behind the Stoneham Police Department, where the Middlesex Sheriff Department's Mobile Training Center parked for six days as officers were drilled in both firearms …

Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian is not ruling out a run to become the next Middlesex District Attorney. Koutoujian, in a statement released last Friday in response to inquires on whether he would run to fill the seat Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone plans to vacate, said "never say never." “I love my job as Sheriff of Middlesex County and am focused on the work before me," Koutoujian said in the statement. The conference, held in Lowell on Monday, was the first step in an effort by local and national law enforcement officials to combat premature deaths from mental health issues by corrections officers throughout the country.
Hundreds of law enforcement officials came to Lowell on Monday as part of a first effort to help address mental and occupational health issues faced by corrections officers across the country. Spearheaded by Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian and the National Sheriffs’ Association, hopes were high that the information exchanged during the gathering can help build greater awareness on a profession that sees 39 percent more suicides than any other job in the United States. “For almost two years, today has been a dream of mine,” said Koutoujian, who worked on suicide prevention legislation while chairing Massachusetts House of Representatives’ Committee on Healthcare from 2003 to 2005. “Now we can begin a national discussion that needs…

Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian is organizing efforts to improve support programs for corrections officers.
Corrections officers face many dangers in their work environment, but none may be more serious than the stresses they endure from years of working in such an extreme setting. To improve the health and wellness of corrections officers nationwide, the Middlesex County Sheriff's Office is launching a campaign to better support officers who feel the heavy burden of their jobs. One part of the effort will be a conference to share ways to assist corrections officers facing mental or physical job-related stresses, according to the Sheriff's Office. The conference will host experts from across the country to discuss the causes and consequences stemming from a prison work environment. The Sheriff's office, in partnership with the National Sheriff…

Peter Koutoujian was introduced as the new Sheriff of Middlesex County at Cambridge District Court in Medford Friday afternoon.
MEDFORD — A department-wide audit will be new Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian’s first order of business, he said during a press conference Friday. The former assistant district attorney and state representative said public safety is the top priority of his new job, but an audit of the books--and personnel practices--is his first task. "My priority is to professionalize this office," Koutoujian said after being introduced by Gov. Deval Patrick Friday. Word leaked out early Friday afternoon that Koutoujian would be named Sheriff, replacing John Granara, who served on an interim basis since James DiPaola committed suicide in late November. We need to focus on the mentally ill and make sure automatic weapons can never get in to the hands of the mentally ill. After seeing what happened in Aurora & Sandy School we were lucky our responders were not harmed or killed. Let's be proactive and work now on stepping up gun control instead of being reactive and spending our time trying to figure out why it happened.   more ›
