Area Legislators Call for Stoneham Voters to Approve Middle School Project

Check out their opinion piece on the estimated $40 million building project.

[Editor's note: The following opinion piece is from the offices of Sen. Katherine Clark and State Reps. Jason Lewis and James Dwyer.] Next week Stoneham residents have a unique opportunity to support a partnership between the town and the state that will strengthen the community and its school system for years to come.  On April 3, during the municipal elections, we encourage you to vote in favor of the debt exclusion override that will fund Stoneham’s share of the construction cost to build a new middle school.  The middle school project has been in development for many years and represents the hard work and dedication of many members of the Stoneham community. The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has worked closely with the…

The Town of Stoneham has 2 (TWO) schools that are currently unused. The first being the East School and secondly the North School.Would it not be wiser to "Retro-Fit" two existing structures, whose purpose was the education of our children. Both sites have enough land for expansion of the current buildings.Just a thought!   more ›

Lots of Love Cat Rescue's Pet of the Week

Hank Needs a Caring Home

Will you adopt this shy cat?

[Editor's note: The following information was submitted by Lots of Love Cat Rescue.] Meet Hank, a very unique looking and beautiful cat, with sweet golden eyes. His body is white, sprinkled with orange splotches, while his face is mostly orange. Two years ago, a trap, neuter and release (TNR) rescue group captured Hank and after being fixed, he was returned to his "home" outside, where a wonderful woman cared for him for the last two years, along with other feral cats. A few months ago, Lots of Love Cat Rescue (LOLCR) received a call from the woman, saying Hank's tail was injured and appeared to be falling apart before her eyes. We came right out and tried trapping, using different sized traps, but to no avail. His disintegrating tail was …

PAWS Pet of the Week

Carberry Needs A Loving Home [VIDEOS]

Will you adopt this affection tabby cat?

My name is Carberry and I'm a laid-back, young adult with simple needs. I am 14 pounds and all brawn, so hopefully I can fit on your lap. If not, I would be happy to just hang out with you—the closer the better. And, if you will brush me, I will follow you anywhere. I absolutely adore being brushed. In fact, if you are not brushing me, I will come and nuzzle you as a reminder. I am just a guy who likes his simple pleasures and that is one of them for me. I am cool with other cats and dogs, but I would prefer that other feline friends are as gentle and welcoming as I am. However, I would also be just fine as your one and only as long as you have time to spend with me. Maybe we could have a dinner date? You should know that I’ll always be …

VISIONS FOR VACANCIES: What Should Be Done with the Former Shaw's Supermarket?

We'll feature a vacant property in town and ask you, our readers, to tell us what you'd like to see done with it.

Empty storefronts aren't an uncommon finding in most communities these days and Stoneham is no exception. So, with that in mind we'll be featuring a different vacant business in town, and you can let us know what you'd like to see done with the building or property. Our first property is one that comes up in discussion quite a bit in town and that concerns the former Shaw's Supermarket, 109 Main St. The store shuttered about a year ago due to lagging sales in comparison to other Shaw's locations. What are your thoughts about this location? Should another grocery store or chain move in? Would you put a restaurant or entertainment space there? Tell us your visions for the property in the comments section below.

Lots of Love Cat Rescue's Pet of the Week

Lovey and Cutie Pie Need a Loving Home

Will you adopt this pair of lifelong friends?

[Editor's note: The following column was submitted by Lots of Love Cat Rescue.] Lovey and Cutie Pie grew up together and are best friends. They adored their warm and comfortable home with Edna, who kept them happy and safe. At 80 years old, Edna became very ill. Her two sweeties, Cutie Pie and Lovey stayed by her side until the day she died. Before she passed away, she whispered to her friend "please make sure my babies are taken care of. This is my last wish." Lots of Love Cat Rescue (LOLCR) was contacted and we moved cats around to make room for these special sisters. As you can imagine, being five years old and knowing nothing else but their quiet home and their sweet Edna, they were very scared coming into the foster home. But even …

Lewis Supports Greater Oversight of Educational Collaboratives

State Rep. Jason Lewis speaks out about educational reform.

[Editor's note: The information below was issued in a press statement from the Office of State Rep. Jason Lewis.] State Rep. Jason Lewis joined his colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives recently in passing legislation that will improve the governance, financial accountability and state and local oversight of regional special education collaboratives, according to a press statement. The collaboratives serve students with special needs that cannot be met within their own school districts. The bill establishes new procedures that will increase transparency and oversight of these education collaboratives, including new ethics requirements for board members and personnel, greater oversight by the Attorney General, State …
