NSTAR Offers Tips to on How to Prepare for Snowstorm

NSTAR has already activated its emergency response plan in preparation for Friday's snowstorm.

With a major nor’easter expected to impact the Stoneham area beginning Friday, NSTAR announced on Thursday it will will activate its emergency response plan for a significant impact on the electric grid. “We’re well into our preparations for responding to potentially widespread power outages resulting from the nor’easter’s high winds and heavy snow,” said Craig Hallstrom, President of NSTAR Electric. “We prepare year-round for storms like this and stand ready to address damage to our system as soon as it becomes safe to do so.” NSTAR said 3,000 employees are currently preparing to assist in the storm reponse effort, and the company has also secured additional contractor line and tree crews.  The company is advising customers to make …

Car Crashes Into Pole on Woodland Road in Stoneham

A vehicle crashed into a pole on Woodland Road early Saturday morning, according to scanner reports.

A vehicle crashed into a pole on Woodland Road early Saturday morning, according to scanner reports.  The crash happened around 3:42 a.m. near 3 Woodland Road, according to the reports. Live wires were down across the roadway, the reports noted. Local and State Police responded to the scene. NSTAR also responded to the scene, as the vehicle could not be moved until the wires were out of the way, according to the reports. By about 6 a.m., the wires had been removed from the road and all lanes were reopened, according to the reports. It is unclear if anyone was injured during the crash.

Police Investigating Single-Car Crash on Forest Street

At 9:25 a.m. Dec. 10, police and fire responded to the area of 53 Forest Street for a report of a car that crashed into a utility pole.

Stoneham Police are investigating a single-car crash into a utility pole that occurred Monday morning on Forest Street. At 9:25 a.m. Dec. 10, police and fire responded to the area of 53 Forest Street for a report of a car that crashed into a utility pole. A man driving a silver 2006 Infinity G35 crashed into a NSTAR pole, according to police. The car sustained front-end damage, while the pole was splintered at its base. "One person was transported to the Lahey Clinic (in Burlington) by ambulance," Police Chief Jim McIntyre said in an email to Stoneham Patch Tuesday, adding that the driver suffered "non-life threatening injuries." Of the 10,585 NSTAR customers in Stoneham, 676 (6.39 percent) were experiencing power outages as of 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to a power outage map on the NSTAR website. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, power outages increased significantly from nearly three dozen homes without electricity to 325. Then, from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, outages increased from 325 to 492.  The power outages increased once again, jumping from 492 to 731 between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday in Stoneham.
