LETTER: Beacon Hill Tax-and-Spend Philosophy Comes to Stoneham

The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident and former Board of Selectman R. Paul Rotondi.

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident and former Board of Selectman R. Paul Rotondi.] The Beacon Hill Gang (BHG) is coming to confiscate Stoneham taxpayers’ wallets. One if by the community preservation surcharge, two if by making the trash fee permanent and three if by eliminating the 2 ½ percent limit on yearly operating budget increases.  Stoneham’s real estate tax revenue is forecasted to increase dramatically over the next few years as a result of the completion of four major developments.  The BHG’s goal is clear, to use this money to feed the never ending appetite of the local government bureaucracy, rather than to use it to provide taxpayer relief.   Their strategy is to go beyond …

Jed: I would like to thank you for proving the talk about the existence of the uniformed voter is not a Myth. First, the Budget Agreement wasn’t mine; it was approved by the Board of Selectman unanimously and by a majority of the Finance Board and School Committee. Second, it doesn’t tie the hands of the departments; departments have complete authority to spend their money as they see. It merely …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Stoneham Resident Won't Vote in Favor of Middle School Project on April 3

Check out Michelle Lauretano's letter for why she can't get behind the current Stoneham Middle School plan.

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident Michelle Lauretano.] On April 3, the town of Stoneham will be asking voters to vote "yes" or "no" to an override to fund a new Middle School at the site of the current Central Elementary School. The Middle School and Central School will remain open and children will be attending classes on the construction site during the approximately two years it will take to construct the new school. Upon completion, children in grades 5-8 will be moved into the new Middle School, Central School will be eliminated and the students in grades K-4 will be redistricted to the remaining three elementary schools. I have recently been inside both the Middle School and the …

Michelle, You make great points and I wish more people could read this. 800 students will have to live with this for 2 years. My daughter keeps asking me if she will be safe while at school. I can't say yes to her and that is sad and wrong. All students in Stoneham should get the same education for our tax dollars. Shame on those who cannot put themselves in our children's shoes. If they planned …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Trio of Stonehamites Back Middle School Plan

Cristine Linn, Joan McDermott and Lauren Murphy ask for voters to approve the Stoneham Middle School proposal on April 3.

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham residents Cristine Linn, Joan McDermott and Lauren Murphy.] We would like to take this opportunity to ask every Stoneham voter to support the new Middle School Building Project. Please vote "yes" on Question 1 on Tuesday, April 3, at our town election.  The School Building Committee has been meeting and researching this project for the past two years. The State of Massachusetts has also researched it, has confidence in it and has approved the building plan overwhelmingly. They will reimburse 57.5 percent of the project. If we delay, this project will cost more and we may have difficulty getting another chance.  The new Middle School will not only improve the …

Where do your kids go to school? Please realize that Central School children and Middle School children will be going to school in a construction zone. We will also be loosing an elementary school which means that class size at the other three schools will increase. Some estimates have class size at 30. Also, if the school change to graded learning (k and 1 in one school, 2 and 3 in another...) …   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Lifelong Stoneham Resident Says He's Voting 'No' to Middle School Project

Read Dick Pignone's opposition letter to the current Stoneham Middle School plan.

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident Dick Pignone.] My name is Dick Pignone and I would like to explain why I am voting "no" on April 3. First of all I would like to publicly state that I want a new Stoneham Middle School. I just do not agree with the current plan.   Not long ago the School Building Committee gave us a similar speech to what we are hearing now about how we need new elementary schools. We heard how it would increase our property values, attract new families to move here, and be good for Stoneham. The town overwhelmingly approved it. Our elementary schools are probably the finest in the state. Eliminating a new and thriving school does not make sense to me.  Redistricting all …

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident Tom Boussy.] It is with great pride and a commitment to public service that I announce my candidacy for the office of Selectman in the Town of Stoneham. My name is Tom Boussy. I have been married to my wife Julie, a registered nurse, for 20 years and we have two beautiful children; Sarah and Hannah. My wife and I have been very involved in our community from sponsoring and coaching youth sports teams, to supporting Girl Scouts and our school system at fundraisers and activities.  For the past 12 years, I have owned and operated my own business, THB Company, Inc., which has provided HVAC testing and balancing, and energy conservation services to large …

Letter to the Editor: Stoneham Selectman Seeks Re-Election to the Board

R. Paul Rotondi, chairperson of the Board of Selectmen, is asking voters to return him to the board on April 3.

[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident R. Paul Rotondi.] Dear Editor, On April 3, the voters will be going to the polls to vote for Selectmen and there has never been a clearer choice. Do we continue to move forward, or do we move back to the tax-and-spend policies of the past? Do we continue to make decisions based on what is best for Stoneham, or do we go back to decisions based on special interests? Do we go forward with experienced leadership?    This election is about qualifications, experience and leadership. With both a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration and 38 years as a manager in the private sector I have the required qualifications. With over 30 years of …

Letter to the Editor: Stonehamite Asks Voters to Approve Stoneham Middle School Project

Check out Brian Gill's letter asking voters to vote in favor of the school construction plan on April 3.

[Editor's note: The following is a Letter to the Editor submitted by Stoneham resident Brian Gill.] It's very exciting to see the outpouring of enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise being shared by so many community members toward such a vital investment in the future of our community. This community-driven Middle School project is not only an an investment in our children’s academic futures, it is an investment in our community and its future. Life is about education. It must be a lifelong commitment. And yes, the learning facility absolutely makes a difference. Research has proven that modern, pleasant surroundings infused with natural light and coupled with sound educational practices and materials have a direct impact on increases in …

Community driven? Updated facilities? We need support for this, not the use of trite political party commentary. It would also be better not to highlight the fact that we allowed the schools to deteriorate.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: School Building Committee Chairperson Thanks Voters for Supporting Middle School Project

Jeanne Craigie says "thank you" to residents who voted to fund the Stoneham Middle School plan at the Feb. 7 Town Meeting.

[Editor's note: The Letter to the Editor below was submitted by Stoneham School Building Committee chairperson Jeanne Craigie.] Dear Town Meeting members, On behalf of the School Building Committee I want to thank you for your support and confidence in the Middle School project at last week’s Town Meeting. Your positive vote gets us one step closer to the April 3 Ballot question. The excitement and energy in Town Hall was just what many of us had hoped for, along with good questions, good debate and a terrific outcome. We need to carry that enthusiasm forward to a much more difficult task: Asking all the voters to support the Debt Exclusion by ballot. A task we have prepared for over the past 24 months. Facts we can defend, facts that make…

Letter to the Editor: Stoneham School Building Chairperson Calls for Middle School Project Support

Jeanne Craigie is asking voters to back the Stoneham Middle School plan at a Special Town Meeting on Feb. 7.

Dear Stoneham residents, The Town of Stoneham will be holding a Special Town Meeting on Feb. 7 to ask you, the voters, to support the Middle School Building Project. This project is not only exciting but challenging for our community. Over the past 19 months a committee of your elected and appointed officials and residents of Stoneham have met to make sure we are providing the best facility the town can afford and the most educationally sound program for our children. We are prepared and ready to do this with the blessing of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) with their vote on Jan. 25. Our road has not been without obstacles including space constraints, underutilized elementary schools, traffic issues, lack of swing space…
