The bill passed Monday by the House was at odds with a more ambitious proposal put forth by Gov. Deval Patrick, who called for $1.9 billion in new revenue to fund transportation and education initiatives in the state. Patrick had said he would veto the $500 million bill. Stoneham would receive a net $416,529 increase in state aid, mostly in the form of Chapter 70 education funding, under Gov. Deval Patrick's proposed fiscal 2014 budget.
Last Wednesday, Gov. Deval Patrick submitted his $34.8 billion budget to the Legislature. The ambitious proposal for the coming fiscal year would make significant investments in education and transportation by raising $1.9 billion in revenue, through a combination of tax increases and eliminating some tax breaks. On the local aid front, Stoneham would receive a net increase (accounting for assessments the town pays to the state) of $416,529, mostly in the form of an increase in Chapter 70 education funding. After losing six of seven precincts in his home town of Stoneham, Georgountzos conceded victory in the state representative race to the incumbent. The Winchester League of Women Voters hosted a State Rep. debate Monday night at Stoneham Town Hall between incumbent Jason Lewis and challenger George Georgountzos. The State Rep. candidates fielded nearly a dozen questions that were submitted prior to the "Day at the Races" Candidate Forum held Oct. 22 in the Town Hall Auditorium. About 80 people were in attendance to hear the candidates speak on a variety of topics, ranging from Chapter 70 funding to the MBTA budget. Each candidate gave brief opening remarks, followed by the question-and-answer portion of the forum before offering closing statements. The Winchester League of Women Voters is hosting the Day at the Races Candidate Forum starting at 7 p.m. at the Stoneham Town Hall Auditorium at 35 Central St., Stoneham. Patti Muldoon of the Arlington League of Women Voters will moderate the forum. Residents are invited to watch Lewis and Georgountzos go head-to-head on local issues raised by residents.
