Superstorm Sandy Relief: How You Can Help

Here is how Massachusetts residents' donations can aid victim's in the most affected areas.

Massachusetts was largely spared from catastrophic damage from Superstorm Sandy, but residents in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other coastal areas were not so lucky. Patch has gathered some local resources if you want to help in relief efforts. Volunteers in New Jersey are being coordinated through an emergency response hotline, 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397). Alternate numbers, for when the hotline isn’t staffed, include 609-775-5236 and 908-303-0471 or emails can be sent to Rowena.Madden@sos.state.nj.us. The New York City agency NYC Service is coordinating volunteers for various relief projects in New York City. NSTAR: Nearly Four Dozen Homes Without Power in Stoneham

As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, 45 NSTAR customers in Stoneham were still without power, according to a NSTAR power outage map.

Nearly four dozen NSTAR customers in Stoneham are still without power Wednesday night after Hurricane Sandy hit the area Monday, according to the energy company's website. Of the 10,585 NSTAR customers in Stoneham, 45 were experiencing power outages as of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to a power outage map on the NSTAR website. NSTAR anticipates having power restored to all of its Stoneham customers by Thursday night.

Hundreds of NSTAR customers in Stoneham are without power Wednesday morning after Hurricane Sandy hit the area Monday, according to the energy company's website. Of the 10,585 NSTAR customers in Stoneham, 339 (3.2 percent) were experiencing power outages as of 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a power outage map on the NSTAR website. NSTAR anticipates having power restored to all Stoneham customers by Thursday night. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, power outages increased significantly from nearly three dozen homes without electricity to 325. Then, from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, outages increased from 325 to 492.  The power outages increased once again, jumping from 492 to 731 between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday in Stoneham. Several hundred NSTAR customers in Stoneham are without power Tuesday afternoon, according to the energy company's website. Of the 10,585 NSTAR customers in Stoneham, 676 (6.39 percent) were experiencing power outages as of 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, according to a power outage map on the NSTAR website. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, power outages increased significantly from nearly three dozen homes without electricity to 325. Then, from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday, outages increased from 325 to 492.  The power outages increased once again, jumping from 492 to 731 between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. Tuesday in Stoneham. Police Chief: 'Slow NSTAR Response' Tied Up Officers For Hours

Officers needed to remain at locations where roadways were blocked by trees with live electrical wires entangled for hours at a time on Monday, according to Stoneham Police Chief Jim McIntyre.

The town's dispatch center was lighting up during the peak hours of Hurricane Sandy Monday, as officers responded to several dozen calls for service, according to Stoneham Police Chief Jim McIntyre. Prior to Hurricane Sandy hitting Stoneham, McIntyre said, "Storm preparation was getting our vehicles in order and lining up additional staffing. During the height of the storm (Monday) night, we had eight officers responding to calls." During the peak period (2:30 p.m. to midnight), the dispatch center fielded 61 calls for service involving trees and wires down, building alarms and medical assistance calls, according to McIntyre. For much of the past week, Hurricane Sandy dominated the region's media coverage. Did it feel worse or not quite as bad as last year's storm?

Much of the Northeastern United States slowed down on Monday to watch Hurricane Sandy make its way up the coast toward its eventual landfall on New England. Throughout the day, residents of Stoneham and elsewhere endured high winds and power outages and in some cases, downed trees and wires. The storm came a year after the so-called "Snowtober" storm left many Massachusetts communities without power. So which storm do you think was worse: Sandy or Snowtober? There is a two-hour delay for Stoneham Public Schools and no AM kindergartern on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Greater Boston Academy is closed Tuesday. All schools were closed on Monday due to Hurricane Sandy.
