The Spartans lost to Notre Academy 6-4 Monday night in the opening round of the State tournament in Stoneham.
The Stoneham High School girls' hockey team’s season came to an abrupt halt on Monday night, as they fell victim to Notre Dame Academy 6-4 in the opening round of the State tournament at Stoneham Arena. The Spartans ended their season with a 10-7-2 overall record. The players were distraught after the playoff loss because their season was over, but it didn't take away from the accomplishments they achieved during the season. Setting the Bar High Jessica Anthony, a senior right defenseman, recalled the Spartans' second game against Wakefield when the team guaranteed them at least a tie to win the Middlesex League Small Division title. “Winning the league is something that no other Stoneham girls' hockey team has done before us and it was …

The 16-year-old center has tallied six goals while notching seven assists in his team's first 13 games this season.
Stoneham Patch Whiz Kid of the Week Key to Awesomeness: Allen has adapted nicely to the changes that took place in 2012 for the Stoneham High hockey team, turning in a very productive year thus far. “We got new coaches and they are really pushing our team to be better through hard work both on and off the ice,” Allen said. “I do my best to listen to everything they say and every time I step on the ice, I have to give it 100 percent.” Allen points out that his success could not be possible without the help of his team and line mates. “I have to give credit to Brendan Regan and Dalton Cox because this year we are really gelling and working well together,” Allen said. “I know that they have my back on the ice and they know that I have their …

The locker room has 22 custom-made stalls and other new features.
[Editor's note: The information below was submitted by Stoneham resident Lisa Gallagher.] Paul Sacco, Tommy Scarpa and Nick Stead, the coaches of the Stoneham High School boys' hockey program, and Lisa Gallagher went before the Board of Selectman to ask them to accept their gift of completely refurbishing the boys' varsity locker room at Stoneham Arena. The group shared a picture of Harvard University's men's locker room as an example of what they were trying to duplicate. The Selectmen unanimously agreed to accept the gift. Over the past few months many volunteers have helped make this dream a reality. A Spartan lue ribbon was cut recently by the seven seniors on the team to reveal a locker room that is almost an exact replica of the …

Stoneham High hockey captain Scott Shannon had eight goals and 10 assists last year for the Spartans, and he's looking to lead the Spartans into the state tournament this year.
Key to Awesomeness: Shannon netted eight goals and dished out 10 assists (18 points) last season for the Spartans and he has set the bar high for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. “Our goals for the upcoming season are to make the tournament once again and try to get more Middlesex League wins than last year,” Shannon said. “We expect some close and competitive games because every game is going to be a grind.” Shannon knows he has many responsibilities as captain, and he plans to keep the entire team even-keeled. “I plan on keeping everyone’s head in the game, helping the team control their emotions and adapting the team to the speed of the game,” Shannon said. “I also need to lead them off the ice.” The Spartans have a group of seniors on …
