This summer we were going to venture out on a 25-city, four-week tour of Europe, but we just felt like the whole spending-money-like-a-rap-star thing was really played out.  OK, so the 2012 summer budget really only allowed for sitting in front of the AC eating a pint of ice cream.  Turns out we are in the minority, because AAA travel club reports that the number of Americans traveling has been on a slow and steady increase for the last two years. AAA's travel data from July 4 of this year showed a 4.9 increase from last year for people trekking more than 50 miles from home to celebrate. POLICE LOG: Man Seen Watching Stoneham Pool With Binoculars

A caller told police they saw an older man watching people at Hall Memorial Swimming Pool with binoculars from the roadway.

The following information was provided by the Stoneham Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. On Tuesday, July 17, Stoneham police responded to a call about a man who may have been spying on the recreational pool, a small brush fire and a report of fireworks. Tuesday, July 17 @1:42 p.m.: Police received a call for a middle-aged, balding man in a light blue or grey minivan using binoculars to look across the roadway toward Hall Memorial Swimming Pool with binoculars. An officer checked the area but found no evidence of the minivan or man. @4:42 p.m.: A brush fire at the Middlesex Fells Reservation was handled by the police and fire departments. Hall Memorial Swimming Pool to Open Sunday, July 15

The Stoneham pool, which was initially wasn't going to be opened by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, is now slated to open this weekend.

Stoneham's Hall Memorial Swimming Pool wasn't expected to be opened by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) this summer, but now the pool is slated to open Sunday, July 15, according to a press statement from Sen. Katherine Clark's office. Open swim hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit the DCR website.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) have reversed their decision to close Hall Memorial Swimming Pool this summer, according to an announcement by State Sen. Katherine Clark. At Tuesday night's Stoneham Board of Selectmen session at Town Hall, Clark and Laura Richter, a representative with State Rep. Jason Lewis' office, informed the board of the pool's opening. “It will take two weeks minimum to get water and staffing up,” said Clark. Stoneham's state legislators are "disappointed" they weren't notified about Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation's (DCR) decision to not open Hall Memorial Swimming Pool this summer. Legislators learned of the closure following Stoneham Patch's June 22 article. "I am disappointed that DCR unilaterally decided to close the Hall Memorial Swimming Pool, amongst others in the DCR system," wrote State Rep. Jim Dwyer in an email to Stoneham Patch. DCR: Hall Memorial Swimming Pool Won't Open This Summer in Stoneham

While Hall Memorial Swimming Pool may be closed in 2012, the wading pool will be open from June 23 to Aug. 26.

After taking into consideration several factors, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has decided not to open Hall Memorial Swimming Pool this summer, according to a DCR spokesperson. "We are in fact not opening the Stoneham swimming pool for the 2012 season," wrote DCR spokesperson S.J. Port in an email to Stoneham Patch. "The wading pool...is open for the season" from June 23 to Aug. 26. The closure of Hall Memorial Swimming Pool, located at 4 North Border Road, is expected to be "temporary, and the facility can be reopened when funding becomes available," according to Port.
