The campaign committee called “Koutoujian for Congress” allows the candidate to raise money for a campaign and hire campaign staff.
Middlesex County Sheriff Peter J. Koutoujian announced Thursday that he is opening a Congressional campaign committee account. The move is a serious indication that Koutoujian will run for U.S. Congress if Congressman Edward Markey wins the U.S. Senate special election next month. "I have dedicated my life to working on issues important to the people I have been honored to represent as a legislator and now as Sheriff. If given the opportunity, I intend to fight for the people of the 5th Congressional district as their representative in Washington," said Koutoujian. "Throughout my career, I have focused on guaranteeing access to quality, affordable health care, enacting common sense measures to strengthen our economy, ensuring public …

Sen. Katherine Clark announced Friday to her supporters that she will be running for Congress.
In a letter emailed to her supporters on Friday afternoon, state Sen. Katherine Clark (D-Melrose) announced that she will be running for Congress. U.S. Representative Ed Markey (D-Malden), who represents Stoneham in the House, is currently running for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by newly appointed Secretary of State John Kerry. If Markey wins that Senate seat, it would leave open the Fifth Congressional District seat in the House, which Clark would run for. If he loses his bid, he would retain his current House seat. Two other Massachusetts legislators have also announced their intentions to run for Markey's seat, if he wins the Senate seat: state Rep. Carl Sciortino (D-Medford) and state Sen. Will Brownsberger (D-Belmont). Stoneham's …

Congress is so focused on the fiscal cliff, the farm bill has yet to be renewed.
Come Jan. 1, there is a threat that milk prices could rise to $6 to $8 a gallon if Congress does not pass a new farm bill that amends farm policy dating back to the Truman presidency, reported the New York Times. If Congress does not renew the Farm Bill by Monday, Dec. 31, the milk price formula reverts back to 1949, reported CBS Boston. On average, a gallon of milk costs $3.65, according to the dairy industry. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said without a farm bill renewal farmers will be in a hurry to sell to the government, creating a shortage in the stores. It is estimated the price of milk could go as high as $8, he told the Capital Press. If the farm bill is not renewed the government will be forced to buy milk at inflated …

After President Obama’s selection of John Kerry as Secretary of State, there’s a lot of interest in the senior senator’s seat.
With U.S. Senator John Kerry as President Barack Obama’s pick for Secretary of State, it’s anyone’s guess who will run for the seat in a special election next summer. Kerry was nominated by Obama on Dec. 21. If Kerry is appointed, Governor Deval Patrick will appoint an interim senator, who will be named to the position before the special election. Names have already been dropped locally and from afar, including actor and Cambridge native Ben Affleck, who said he is not interested in running for the seat Kerry has held since 1985. Earlier in December, U.S. Representative Edward Markey told reporters at Malden City Hall, he would "seriously consider" running for Kerry’s seat in the U.S. Senate. On Thursday, he made it official, announcing …

The President and Congress have just a few days to avert automatic tax increases and spending cuts. A number of Massachusetts Congressmen suggest cutting nuclear programs instead.
Starbucks baristas are writing "come together" on all cups in the Washington, DC, area to encourage Congress and the President to come together to fix the fiscal cliff issue. For more information about this initiative, go to www.patch.com/fixthedebt. Congress and President Obama are racing against the clock this week as they make one last attempt to hammer out a deal to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” the U.S. government is set to go over on New Year’s Day. Without a compromise deal to lower the deficit, the government will face a self-imposed deadline that triggers both spending cuts and higher taxes. Congress itself set the Jan. 1 deadline after failing to come to a budget compromise earlier this year. On Jan. 1, the George W. Bush-…

Instead, those polled say, increase taxes on the rich and end corporate subsidies.
As Congress wrestles with how to avoid the imminent fiscal cliff, a poll finds that Massachusetts voters strongly favor increased taxes on the rich, less corporate welfare and no cuts in social security, Medicare or Medicaid. "I think that this survey really gives us a clear view of voters expectations of their elected officials," said Jason Stephany of MassUniting, a coalition of community groups, neighborhoods, faith organizations and workers advocating for good jobs, corporate accountability. MassUniting conducted the poll along with Public Policy Polling. It was conducted from Nov. 27-29 and included 638 Massachusetts voters. "Essentially, the big thing that this poll tells us is that this election was not a fluke or a one-off thing…

The congressional candidate saw a surge in campaign cash in the fourth quarter.
Just a few weeks after announcing his campaign for Congress, Republican Richard Tisei has reason to smile -- as well as an impressive pile of money, for a Republican running in a largely Democratic district. The former State Senate minority leader and lieutenant governor candidate, who announced his candidacy for the state's 6th District congressional seat in mid-November, raked in $305,000 in the last seven weeks of 2011, according to a report by Roll Call. Tisei, who has a long history in Massachusetts politics and a track record as a heavyweight fundraiser, will run in the Republican primary for the chance to take on Conressman John Tierney in the general election next fall. Born in Somerville and raised in Wakefield, Tisei served in …

Richard Tisei will kick off his campaign seeking the 6th District congressional seat.
Former State Senate Majority Leader Richard Tisei will officially announce his run for the state’s 6th District seat in Congress on Tuesday in his hometown of Wakefield. “I own a small business, a real estate company, and I’ve been working with people who were really having a hard time, who’ve lost their jobs, who’ve seen their life savings disappear,” Tisei said of his decision to run. “The American dream of home ownership has disappeared.” One factor in his decision was the state’s redistricting plan, which Tisei said he was waiting to be completed before announcing his run. The district is slated to pick up Tewksbury, Billerica and part of Andover. Those communities have been shown to favor Republicans in recent elections. “I know a lot…

Leo Maloney’s first book signing is slated for Jan. 27 at The Book Oasis in Stoneham.
Stoneham resident Leo Maloney is quick to admit that he’s not a seasoned writer. Maloney comes from a military background, having been recruited into the army in 1966. He does, however, have vast experience as a skilled world traveler, actor, oh, and black ops contractor. Yes, black ops. What better subject matter for an action thriller fiction novel based on real-life events? The novel is titled “Termination Orders: Code Name Cobra” and is available to purchase at his first book signing at The Book Oasis, located at 311 Main St., from 7–8:30 p.m. Jan. 27. For over 35 years, Maloney couldn't explain to his closest family and friends what he really did for a living. While serving his country, he operated several cover businesses in order …

Does Katherine support her fellow Dems in their continually disgusting protection of sex offenders? She owes the victims of John Burbine an explanation. State Rep. Brian Mannal (D-Barnstable) A freshman state legislator now championing a bill to help convicted sex offenders get taxpayer-funded lawyers has earned more than $139,000 from the state’s public defender coffers in the past several years…   more ›
