Newtown Shooting Victims Honored at Christmas Eve Vigil in Stoneham

The 26 victims in the Newtown, Conn. shooting on Dec. 14 were remembered during a Christmas Eve vigil at the Stoneham Town Common.

Dozens of Stoneham area residents attended a solemn Christmas Eve vigil to honor the Newtown, Conn. shooting victims at the Stoneham Town Common. The vigil was organized by concerned Stoneham mom Erin Sinclair who put it together through a Facebook page, an email blast campaign and word of mouth. “Grace Mcdonald, age seven. Emily Parker, age six. Jack Pinto, age six...,” said Jim Devlin, veteran's service officer for Stoneham, from a small podium at the gazebo on the Common. While reading the names of the 26 victims, Devlin fought to hold back tears as others wept openly. “My heart just goes out to the families, I'm constantly thinking about them,” explained Stoneham mother, Erin Riddell, summing up much of the sympathies of those in …

[Editor's note: The following is the speech given by Newtown, Conn. resident Dara McKenzie during the Christmas Eve vigil at the Stoneham Town Common.] "My name is Dara McKenzie and this is my husband Joe and our almost three- year-old daughter Kylie who was most likely attending Sandy Hook Elementary in September for preschool. We are here today because we are visiting our family, Joe's mother Elaine McKenzie who is a native of Stoneham and currently a children's librarian here in town. His father, Richard, who has lived in Stoneham for 33 years and his sister Janyce who graduated from Stoneham High School. Newtown, Conn. Family With Stoneham Ties to Attend Christmas Eve Vigil

A family from the Newtown, Conn. community will be in attendance for the Christmas Eve vigil planned in Stoneham to honor the Newtown shooting victims, according to organizer Erin Sinclair.

A family from the Newtown, Conn. community will be in attendance for the Christmas Eve vigil planned in Stoneham to honor the Newtown shooting victims, according to organizer Erin Sinclair. Dara and Joe McKenzie, who have lived in Newtown for three years, will be attending the vigil, according to Sinclair.  "(The McKenzies) have an almost 3-year-old daughter Kylie who was most likely going to attend Sandy Hook Elementary (School) for preschool in September," Sinclair said, adding that the family was not a victim in the shooting. Joe McKenzie has ties to the Stoneham community, as he grew up in town, according to Sinclair. The money donated to the sandy hook school support fund set up by the united way will go to rebuilding the community for the long term.
