The committee released the interim redistricting report on Nov. 29.
The Stoneham Elementary Redistricting Committee recently released an interim redistricting report related to the Middle School project, according to the Stoneham Public Schools website. The 13-member committee released the interim redistricting report on Nov. 29. The report provides an overview as to why redistricting is necessary and some of the potential changes that may be on the horizon. Why Redistrict? In 2012 at a Stoneham Special Town Meeting, voters approved the estimated $40 million Middle School project, which involves converting the existing Central Elementary School into the Central Middle School for grades 5-8, according to the report. Additional reasons for redistricting also include opportunities to improve educational …

The Stoneham Building Committee has scheduled a final site plan review for June 25 at 6 p.m in the High School Library.
Monday, June 18, 2012
The Stoneham Building Committee scheduled a final site plan review for June 25 at 6 p.m in the High School Library.
The School Building Committee recently devised a traffic and parking plan for the Stoneham Middle School project, according to a letter from the School Building Committee. The traffic flow and parking plan, which is expected to run during the 2012-2014 school years, was created with help from the design and consultation team as well as town officials, according to the June 6 letter sent to parents and neighbors of Central Elementary School and Middle School students. Central Elementary School Plan "All traffic will approach the school from William Street up Pomeworth Street toward Washington Street," reads the letter. "We anticipate that the Board of Selectmen will declare Pomeworth to be one-way from William to Washington. "No parent or …

Check out Michelle Lauretano's letter for why she can't get behind the current Stoneham Middle School plan.
[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident Michelle Lauretano.] On April 3, the town of Stoneham will be asking voters to vote "yes" or "no" to an override to fund a new Middle School at the site of the current Central Elementary School. The Middle School and Central School will remain open and children will be attending classes on the construction site during the approximately two years it will take to construct the new school. Upon completion, children in grades 5-8 will be moved into the new Middle School, Central School will be eliminated and the students in grades K-4 will be redistricted to the remaining three elementary schools. I have recently been inside both the Middle School and the …

Read Dick Pignone's opposition letter to the current Stoneham Middle School plan.
[Editor's note: The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Stoneham resident Dick Pignone.] My name is Dick Pignone and I would like to explain why I am voting "no" on April 3. First of all I would like to publicly state that I want a new Stoneham Middle School. I just do not agree with the current plan. Not long ago the School Building Committee gave us a similar speech to what we are hearing now about how we need new elementary schools. We heard how it would increase our property values, attract new families to move here, and be good for Stoneham. The town overwhelmingly approved it. Our elementary schools are probably the finest in the state. Eliminating a new and thriving school does not make sense to me. Redistricting all …

Check out their opinion piece on the estimated $40 million building project.
[Editor's note: The following opinion piece is from the offices of Sen. Katherine Clark and State Reps. Jason Lewis and James Dwyer.] Next week Stoneham residents have a unique opportunity to support a partnership between the town and the state that will strengthen the community and its school system for years to come. On April 3, during the municipal elections, we encourage you to vote in favor of the debt exclusion override that will fund Stoneham’s share of the construction cost to build a new middle school. The middle school project has been in development for many years and represents the hard work and dedication of many members of the Stoneham community. The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) has worked closely with the…

Our readers voted about 3-to-1 in favor of the project.
In a recent poll, our readers voted more than 3-to-1 in favor of the estimated $40 million Stoneham Middle School project. Of the 57 votes cast, 41 votes (71 percent) backed the project, while 13 votes (22 percent) voted against it. Three votes (five percent) were unsure whether they supported or were against the project. On our Facebook page, Stoneham resident Margaret Rose-Principato supported the project, saying, "Absolutely!!! Stoneham needed a new middle school when my oldest was there....SHE'S 30!!! It's about time!!!" However, the project does have its detractors, as Stoneham residents Gina Sgarzi and Ralph Lauretano wrote on the Stoneham patch website "Vote no." "I'm not comfortable with my kids going to school for two years at a …
