Whiz Kids

Nicolette Del Vecchio Is This Week's Whiz Kid

Del Vecchio turned in a strong regular season, batting .333 with 20 runs batted in and 10 extra-base hits.

Stoneham Patch Whiz Kid of the Week Key to Awesomeness: Del Vecchio has been a key component to the Spartan’s success this season. Del Vecchio is a pitcher, but when she is not pitching, she resides at the hot corner, third base. This is the position she plays on her summer team and hopes to play in college. “I contribute my success to my hard work and dedication to the sport. Since I was about seven years old, I have always tried my hardest to reach my full potential and be the best that I could be,” Del Vecchio said. “I’ve been playing since I was in first grade and I have learned so much over the years. "I love this sport so much and I hope to continue playing throughout college.” Del Vecchio knows her teammates play a significant role …

Stoneham Softball Falls to Burlington

The Stoneham High School softball team lost 7-6 in the preliminary round of the state tournament on Thursday.

The No. 15 ranked Stoneham High School softball team was winning 6-2 in the third at Burlington High School on Thursday in the first round of the North Division 2 softball tournament, but senior captain and starting pitcher Nicolette Del Vecchio allowed five runs in the third and fourth innings and ultimately fell to Burlington, 7-6. “We started out, but it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish,” Stoneham coach Tom Johnson said. "We didn’t really finish (Burlington) off and we had a chance to really put them away. We gave them a little bit of life and they fought back and they fought back and they fought back and that’s why they won the league this year and probably will do well in the tournament. "Hopefully this will be their toughest …

STONEHAM — Stoneham High School cruised to victory Thursday night on their home floor, beating the winless Red Devils of Burlington High, 46-24. The Spartans' effort on the defensive end was impressive, causing turnovers nearly every time Burlington touched the ball on offense. Stoneham coach Angela Billings was very pleased with her team. “We came out firing and our defense was very strong," Billings said. "We put them away early and that is what we needed." The Spartans dominated on the offensive end and led 24-4 after the first quarter.  Stoneham built on their lead in the second quarter before closing out the half with a 34-8 advantage. It took a lot of pressure off the team and allowed key starters to receive the rest they needed. It …

The Burlington Red Devils beat the Spartans, 4-0, Wednesday night at the Burlington Ice Palace.

BURLINGTON — The Stoneham High School boys' hockey team were shutout on the road, 4-0, by the Red Devils of Burlington in front of a jam-packed raucous crowd at the Burlington Ice Palace Wednesday night. The reason for the large and emotional crowd was senior forward Chris Rolli, who was making his first appearance at the Palace wearing the home team's colors. When Rolli had previously worn blue and white playing in the building for Stoneham, he was the Spartans' leading scorer last year before transferring to Burlington. Both teams started off the first period feeding off the energy of the crowd and playing spirited, physical hockey. In some cases the players were too emotional, with refs handing out two sets of matching penalties for …
