The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is instituting a parking ban starting at 9 p.m. Saturday due to the snowstorm, according to a State Police press statement.
Updated at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29 The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is instituting a parking ban starting at 9 p.m. Saturday due to the snowstorm, according to a State Police press statement. "...The Department of Conservation and Recreation or DCR will institute a parking ban on all of their roads in anticipation of the pending storm," reads the statement. "These roads are all around parks, waterways and areas generally patrolled by the State Police. "All vehicles not removed from these areas will be towed to allow for snow removal and emergency access." State Police initially reported the ban would begin at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, but sent out a second press statement with the corrected time of 9 p.m.

After losing six of seven precincts in his home town of Stoneham, State Rep. candidate George Georgountzos has conceded the victory to incumbent Jason Lewis.
After losing six of seven precincts in his home town of Stoneham Tuesday night, George Georgountzos conceded victory in the state representative race to incumbent Jason Lewis. After a long campaign season Chris Kellogg, campaign manger for Lewis, said the team and Lewis were excited for the win. "I am extraordinarily happy, and I did not expect Jason to do as well as he did," Kellogg said. "I really feel that it speaks to the quality of an individual of Jason because he did do so well." Kellogg also wished Georgountzos luck in his future political endeavors. There was an armed robbery at Sunset Tanning Thursday night, according to a scanner report.
There was an armed robbery at a Stoneham tanning salon Thursday night, according to a scanner report. At around 8 p.m. Thursday, Stoneham Police responded Sunset Tanning, 62 Montvale Ave., for a report of an armed robbery, according to the report. A male suspect showed a handgun, took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the salon, according to the report. This is the second armed robbery in Stoneham this week, including one Tuesday night at DB Mart convenience store. The tanning salon was closed upon arrival. Police declined to comment on the case Thursday night, but did say no arrests have been.

A worker briefly trapped at the demolition site at the Stoneham Middle School freed himself and wasn't injured during the incident Tuesday afternoon, according to project staff. Around 12:30 p.m. there was a small roof collapse, but the male worker wasn't injured during the incident, according to Stoneham School Building Committee chairwoman Jeanne Craigie. The worker was assessed and was fine, declining transport to a nearby hospital, according to Stoneham Fire Chief Joseph Rolli. Rolli discussed his team's response to the incident. "We have three firefighters on detail whenever a building is being demolished and part of the reason is because something like this could happen," Rolli said. There was a report of a coyote in the area of 22 Myopia Road Thursday afternoon in Stoneham.
A coyote spotted in the Myopia Road area of Stoneham Thursday afternoon was not captured, according to Stoneham's Animal Control Officer Brian Johnston. Johnston, who was not called out for the report of a coyote near 22 Myopia Road, said in an email to Stoneham Patch: "The numerous calls that I received stated it appeared to be a younger coyote and was just walking up and down the street 'like a dog.' Not to take away that this is still a wild animal and should be treated as one. In my opinion it probably wandered away from its den." There was an attempted robbery at Dunkin' Donuts near J.J. Grimsby's was robbed Thursday evening, according to scanner reports. At roughly 6 p.m., Stoneham police were called to Dunkin' Donuts, 2 Lynn Fells Parkway, for a report of a robbery. The suspect showed a knife before fleeing the store on foot, according to reports. No injuries have been reported. Three police cruisers arrived at the scene with lights flashing, according to a tweet posted by Twitter user @KarynInBoston. Police are looking for a white man wearing aviator glasses and a blue shirt.

Multi-vehicle accidents have caused traffic issues on Route 93 northbound in Stoneham Saturday afternoon, according to Twitter reports. The first accident took place around 3:30 p.m., and the right lane of the highway was closed and traffic was "backed up a couple miles," according to Twitter user @CelestialAxis. However, all lanes recently reopened and traffic is backed up to Spot Pond, according to Twitter user @NEFirebuff. No reports of any injuries or tows. About 4:30 p.m., @NEFirebuff tweeted: "Another 2 car crash on (Route) 93N at exit 34 in #Stoneham. Left lane taken. And a 3 car paper exchange at (Route) 128 off in the (break down lane)." Police are searching for a man who broke into a home on Lynn Fells Parkway Friday afternoon, according to reports. The incident happened after 2 p.m. and Melrose police arrived on scene first. It's unclear what, if anything, was taken from the Lynn Fells Parkway home. Stoneham police also responded and are searching for a suspect described as a white man in his late 20s or early 30s, wearing all dark blue sweats with a blue-and-red backpack. The suspect was last seen riding a mountain bike, heading in the direction of J.J. Grimsby's. We'll post more updates as we receive them.
