Summer Camp Sells Out in Stoneham

For the past three years, youth in Stoneham have flocked to the Boys & Girls Club’s Summer Camp. This year, the club’s camp has expanded its capacity and was able to sell out very early.

Around the Stoneham community there is a great level of excitement around the club’s camp due to its quality programming, emphasis on fun, and affordable price. All around the club and outside in the fields it is clear that the children and adolescents who are part of the camp are having an incredible experience that will have a positive impact on their lives beyond the summer.

When I spoke with Summer Camp Director Heather Merrow, she said: “Our Summer Camp is very engaging and attracts new members to the Club who are apt to return to the Club during the school year.”

The club prides itself on the wide variety of programs it offers to a wide range of age groups during the summer. On a typical day, campers could be engaged in a large number of exciting activities. These include athletic field games, arts and crafts, drama, cooperative games, educational activities, classes on nutrition and access to the club’s technology center. All of these activities are led by trained staff that tailor these activities to the particular age group that they are working with.

Campers start off as young as five years old and progress through the program until they reach the Counselor-In-Training group for twelve to fourteen year olds. Those involved have the opportunity to enjoy the engaging camp activities, receive leadership training, as well as providing service through assisting camp counselors lead camp activities for younger campers. All of these programs share a commonality of being fun and teaching Club Members new skills and encouraging positive peer to peer interaction.  

At the cornerstone of the club’s camp are the talented staff that run and implement all of the activities that the club offers over the summer. To start, all of the counselors are current or former club members who have been invested in the club for a large portion of their lives.

Additionally, four of the counselors are local Youth of the Year winners who received this honor due to their ability to overcome obstacles in their lives, dedicate themselves to serving the Club and the greater community, and embody a positive attitude. All of the Club’s Summer Camp Staff are well trained and it is evident that they not only bring a high level of enthusiasm to the Camp, but also ensure that all campers are safe at all times. In addition, the Staff displays a strong will to make a positive impact on the campers that they work with.
