Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham Participates in Science Fair at Gillette Stadium

Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham participate in the Science of Sports Science Fair at Gillette Stadium in an engaging program sponsored by the New England Patriots and Raytheon.

In early June, six middle school-age club members participated in the Science of Sports Science Fair at Gillette Stadium. The inspiring science program provides Boys & Girls Club members the opportunity to create a sports-based science project and then present this project at the annual fair for a chance to compete for scholarships.

The aim of this program, which is part of Raytheon’s MathMovesU initiative, is to motivate middle school students in the areas of math and science through the use of engaging hands-on activities.

This year was the first time that club members from the were involved in the Science of Sports program. For the program, these Club Members investigated the impact that sports beverages such as Gatorade and Powereade have on athletic performance in comparison
to water.

All members involved in the project stated that they learned a substantial amount about how to conduct a scientific study; from generating a hypothesis, following through with testing and checking their results before presenting their findings.

According to the club members that participated stated that it very rewarding to take their project to the Science Fair to share their hard work. Jessica stated, “Overall, it was an incredible experience to present our study.” In addition they all shared that it was exciting to meet Owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft and Patriots Running Back, Danny Woodhead.

Club Members are already looking forward to the possibility of taking part in the “Science of Sports” project next year based on how successful this program proved to be.
