The opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympics in London kicks off Friday night, according to the London 2012 Olympic Games website.

At 7:30 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time, the opening ceremony will begin and it'll be aired on NBC. The ceremony will be directed by Danny Boyle, perhaps best known for directing the film "Slumdog Millionaire."

The ceremony will include appearances from Queen Elizabeth II, Paul McCartney and more. The event is expected to have a British theme that features popular fictional characters, such as Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and James Bond, according to the Associated Press.

About 15,000 performers and 10,000 athletes will participate in the ceremony, according to a report by the L.A. Times.

The Times also reported that "the NBC broadcast will be hosted by Bob Costas alongside Matt Lauer and Meredith Viera. Ryan Seacrest and Tom Brokaw will contribute interviews and reports."
