The 16-year-old runner has turned in strong performances in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay this season for the Spartans.

Stoneham Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

  • Anthony DeAngelo, 16
  • Accomplishment: DeAngelo’s relay team has not lost this year and placed sixth at the Class C State Relays.

Key to Awesomeness: DeAngelo has been running the 100m and 200m this year. He is also a part of the 4x100m relay. His team has yet to lose this season. DeAngelo has been consistently winning the 100m and 200m or finishing in second place. The Spartans record stands at 4-2 and DeAngelo has played a key role in the Spartans’ victories.

“I attribute my success to my coaches, mostly Al Kopek, for pushing me in the weight room and when we run,” DeAngelo said. “Also, my parents for supporting me and always coming to my meets and helping me be the best athlete I can be.”

DeAngelo described his pre-meet preparation and how he plans to run better in the future so those second place finishes can turn into first place ones.

“I prepare for meets by taking ice baths, rolling a lot, stretching and working on my stride length and stride frequency,” DeAngelo said. “I want to get better by running a more effective race. By that I mean having a better race strategy and finishing stronger and faster than my opponents.”

While his high school career is yet to be finished, DeAngelo is thinking to the future and if he will give track a shot in college.

“I have an interest in running track in college although I do not know where. I’ve been in contact with the Merrimack coach,” DeAngelo said. “They have a brand new track program and I would definitely be interested in building their program, but for now I want to concentrate on winning for Stoneham high.”
