Stoneham Honors Veterans, Nine Mystery WWI Soldiers

The Town of Stoneham held a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday morning.

The Legion Honor Guard, the Stoneham High School Band lead by by Director Ed Grammer, Senator Katherine Clark, The Cub Scouts and The Boy Scouts all participated in the ceremony under a massive American Flag which the Fire Department draped over Town Hall. Mike and Sue Doucette hung a large banner thanking Veterans on the gazebo across the street from the Town Hall.

Veterans agent Jim Devlin presented lost Medals of Honor from nine WWI soldiers from Stoneham.

“This was really an accidental discovery,” Devlin said. “We want to acknowledge what the medals are and who they are for.” The Veteran’s Service office will honor these men with a plaque and a display case for the medals.

The names of the honored soldiers are Howard Barnes, William Cronin, Howie Elsworth, Hollis Nelson, Charles Prescott, Paul Schlichting, Charles Sherborn, Edward Zaun and Oscar Zaun.

“All we have is their names,” Devlin said. “No serial numbers, Social Security numbers, discharge papers or history on them.”
