Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin has announced the date of the special election to replace U.S. Senator-Elect Edward Markey (D-Malden) in the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to a tweet from Matthew Murphy of State House News Service, the election will be held Dec. 10. Primaries for the election will be held Oct. 15.

Markey was sworn in Tuesday to the Senate seat he won over Republican Gabriel Gomez last month, according to a Fox 25 report.

Five Democratic candidates have already entered the race to fill Markey's District 5 House seat. They are: State Sen. Will Brownsberger of Belmont; State Sen. Katherine Clark of Melrose; Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian of Waltham; State Rep. Carl Sciortino of Medford and State Sen. Karen Spilka of Ashland.

Markey had served in the U.S. House since 1976. He won the special election to replace U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry in the Senate.
