An Elm Street resident claimed that an elderly man was driving the minivan down Central Street across Elm and failed to stop at a red light. The minivan reportedly struck the Stratus, which was traveling on Elm toward Walgreens, causing the accident, according to the witness. Airbags deployed in both cars.

The minivan driver was seen getting out of his car and walking over to the Stratus to check on the driver, according to the witness. Police and ambulances arrived shortly after the crash, and the elderly man and unknown driver of the Stratus were transported to area hospitals for medical attention, according to the witness.

Stoneham firefighters noticed a larger amount of gas in the street and quickly covered it with sand. After police directed traffic for about a half hour while the vehicles were towed away by Franklin Auto Transport, the scene was cleared of all debris and traffic continued normally.
