VISIONS FOR VACANCIES: What Should Be Done with the Former Shaw's Supermarket?

We'll feature a vacant property in town and ask you, our readers, to tell us what you'd like to see done with it.

Empty storefronts aren't an uncommon finding in most communities these days and Stoneham is no exception.

So, with that in mind we'll be featuring a different vacant business in town, and you can let us know what you'd like to see done with the building or property.

Our first property is one that comes up in discussion quite a bit in town and that concerns the former Shaw's Supermarket, 109 Main St. The due to lagging sales in comparison to other Shaw's locations.

What are your thoughts about this location? Should another grocery store or chain move in? Would you put a restaurant or entertainment space there? Tell us your visions for the property in the comments section below.

Trader Joes or a Whole Foods would be awesome in this location. The closest trader Joes is in Saugus and the closes WF is in Winchester. Each about 6 miles away from Stoneham.

Since Whole Foods is going in to the golf course project in Lynnfield by next year (http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2012/02/05/lynnfield_project_on_former_golf_course_set_to_move_forward/?page=1), I'm thinking a Hannafords or Trader Joe's would be a good fit here.

Market Basket the one in Reading may have to move when their lease is up

I would love to see a Chunky's movie theater go in. With the loss of Hago Harrington's, Stoneham has nothing fun to do. This would be at least something.

I think a Christmas Tree Shops or a Dave and Buster's (or something similiar) would do well in that location.

I think that based on the size (square Footage) the store is too small for a Target/Walmart... Too big for a Trader Joes... I think Whole Foods could work, possibly Xmas Tree Shop, But what I think would be perfect and boost the attraction to Redstone would be maybe a Best Buy, Maybe a Old Navy Store (if that is not too big for an Old Navy... But I really wish we had a Best Buy store closer than Burlington or Saugus.

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. Walmart would be great but like Scott I think the store is too small. There is also a Trader Joes' on Middlesex Ave. in Burlington right before the new Super Market Basket.

Would love to see either of these; Christmas Tree Shop, Market Basket or Bed, Bath & Beyond

I would love to see Trader Joe's or the Christmas Tree Shop in Stoneham! Also, that was a good point about the loss of Hago Harrington's golf; an activity center like Jump on In or Monster Golf would be great. Kate Arria

How about a Pizza Bowling Pub? Trafer Joes or christmas tree would be great. There are still many spaces available in redstone. I wish the owners of the property would really be proactive in leasing the spaces.

We like the idea of either an Olive Garden (please!), a Market Basket, or a cinema.

I think the problem is that it seems awfully hard in Stoneham to get permits and I don't know how the "owners" can leave the plaza looking like a blighted area with so many empty stores without getting some kind of fine. It really is unattractive and disparaging to shoppers to see so many empty businesses. Whatever residents suggest, I think it will stay abysmal and not bring in any more revenue. Sadly some one must be getting paid and paid well to leave it in that condition. Should be investigated..just saying!

Trader Joe's or a Christmas tree shop... What about AC Moore or Michaels.. Anything but an empty store would be nice.. What about the front of the strip mall from Main Street? We need to fill these spaces as well..
Nadine Houston Dalo February 28, 2012 at 12:11 AM
Good luck with that.............How long have so many storefronts been empty? So disgusting!

I would love to see an indoor/outdoor multi-use athletic facility like Forekicks in Marlboro.

I always hope to see a "Traders Joes, Coming soon" sign on the storefront windows- it would be so much more convenient than having to drive to Saugus or Burlington. I am not sure the community would support a Whole Foods since there is one only a few miles from here in Woburn (although I would love to have a WF in my own backyard!).
Todd Goldstein March 01, 2012 at 04:12 PM
how about a Dave&Busters?
Patricia B March 01, 2012 at 04:17 PM
I like the idea of Trader Joe's but I really miss the Caldor/Ames of the past. I wish we had a similar like department store - remember Woolworth's? You have to leave town to shop, not a good thing.
DenVal March 01, 2012 at 05:07 PM
There's so much vacancy in that mall..such a shame. Numerous suggestions above could fill all the vacancy.

It is so funny to see all the comments about wanting a Trader Joe's at this site... If you looked at the Reading patch, everyone there similarly wanted a Trader Joe's for the old Atlantic site (no deal, its going to be apartments plus a few small retail stores) and in the North Reading patch, it seems everyone wants a Trader Joe's for the old Stop & Shop site (no deal b/c S&S apparently can control who goes there & won't want competition). With all this perceived desire you'd think Trader Joe's would get the hint!
Nadine Houston Dalo March 02, 2012 at 07:11 AM
All the ideas - especially a Trader Joe's or WF market would be ideal but it does seem like it's so hard to get anything in that plaza............I really dislike seeing all the closed storefronts there also. It's sad and I'm sure any of the suggestions could/would do well!
Janice fennelly March 11, 2012 at 12:14 PM
Hi. Market Basket please!! I shop at the one in Reading and it's always a mob scene. Stoneham is in desperate need of a good grocery store. I'm so tired of Woburn, Burlington and Saugus getting all the new stores. Redstone Plaza looks ready for tenants....why aren't they moving in?
Steve Walles March 14, 2012 at 07:36 PM
DocRoha, I don't know who told you that Hago Harrington's is gone, but you have been misinformed. I just found out from a very reliable source that it was purchased by new owners and renovations are underway for reopening on April 1. We have not lost Hago's.

Trader Joe's or Whole Foods would be awesome!
DenVal April 04, 2012 at 03:01 PM
How about Wegman's they have landed in Mass and the prices are right and the store awesome.
