Opinion: Selectmen 'Cannot' Call a 'Special Town Meeting'

Tonight ( May 13 ) Selectman dePinto with the 'Backing' of Selectman Sweeney, and the Rest of the Board, 'Erroneously' were counseled that 'They' as a Board by 'Themselves' could call a 'Special Town Meeting' to once again bring forth 'more' discussion regarding the 'never ending' Bike Path '"Leases' to 'once again'.. Continue these Businesses to extend the June 30 deadline for them to Vacate the use of 'Town Land' they've been using for Decades which began with them paying $ 1.00 per year and for many years 'Zero' .  The Vote was to have the 'Selectmen' call a Special Town Meeting. 'NO'...They 'Cannot'.. Plainly Ch. 39, Section 10 legislates the 'Selectmen can call a 'Town Meeting or Election'.. but as to a 'Special'....I 'quote'.
"The selectmen shall call a 'special town meeting 'upon request in writing, of two hundred registered voters or of twenty per cent of the total number of registered voters of the town, whichever number is the lesser; such meeting to be held not later than forty-five days after the receipt of such request, and shall insert in the warrant therefor all subjects the insertion of which shall be requested by said petition.'    As you see, in order to call a Special' they must abide by the notations just noted. The Section clearly 'differentiates' a 'Town Meeting requirement from a 'Special' and it must be 'initiated' by the 'Citizens' only. If Attorney Houghton, the Selectmen 'pushing' hard for a 'go at it' Once again ; by the deadline of June 30, they'd best put on their Roller Skates. 
And as they are all 'Running around' for these 200 signatures, let us remember these businesses had FIVE YEARS...since the 'Blockade' of interested Speakers wished to speak on that long ago night which some of us, won't soon..........'forget'.  Perhaps the larger question is : Why in the World are we the people of this community having to go through and fight for : Our Own Land ? !
