Redstone Plaza

Anyone know what is going to go in at Redstone Plaza, where they are working on the roof?

Boy I sure wish it was a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. We need another food store on 28.
C August 26, 2013 at 10:12 AM
crafts ??? please - can we please get a good store here in stoneham ! yep --- tj's would be great, totally agree ! nowhere to food shop here and sick of consistently bringing my business to every other town than my own for everything!
Patricia Walsh August 26, 2013 at 11:38 AM
I totally agree with 'karmeng987' and 'C' that we need another grocery store. Please contact David Fleming, WS Development (617) 646-3273 or David.Fleming@wsdevelopment.com. WS Development manages and handles the rentals at Redstone. We abut Redstone and I have contacted him on several occassions. I bet the more residents that contact him, the more likely he will listen to Stoneham residents needs and wants. I am appalled that Stoneham has allowed Stop & Shop to have a monopoly for so long.... I also shop outside of Stoneham rather than resort to the high prices at S&S.

Market Basket would be nice but generally they prefer owning their space and now with their inner squabbling and family members wanting $$$ out of their company afraid their prices will go up. My wish list for Stoneham would be Starbucks, Trader Joe's, Tuscan Market, a Shoe Repair shop, Steak House and The Rack. Am I asking too much :)

Market Basket is less than 2 miles from Redstone...it is in Reading, but would they really put another one that close or do we need another one so close? Whole Foods opened in Melrose close to the Stoneham line. I think we need somewhere fun where our kids can hang out off the streets and out of the playgrounds and off school grounds where there has been a lot of vandalism. Michaels is a good store as well. There isn't another craft store close by, and adults and kids alike will welcome the convenience. It's a great place to shop for Christmas. We don't have gift/toy stores close either. Any truth to the rumor about Chunky's cinema moving in?
Patricia August 29, 2013 at 09:39 AM
I like Michaels going in Redstone. I'd love Starbucks, Trader Joe's (or some other kind of grocery store). How about a Panera Bread? I think someplace for kids to hang out is great, but I'd hate to see Redstone used as a hang out place for kids, to be honest. I remember when we had a bowling alley, that would be pretty good. Something like Kings.
Kathleen Walsh Marks August 29, 2013 at 07:55 PM
Trader Joes would be great, but other than that, I just don't see a need for another grocery store when we have other options so close. I don't want a hang out for kids, but somewhere else for them to get together besides parks, storefronts and school yards. That's just asking for trouble.

Good points Patricia & Kathleen. For those with short memories, stoneham used to be a 2 grocery store town, but Market Basket put Shaw's out of business. It does stink to have to bring our business to other towns. A few months ago, we had a b-day party for my daughter at Gym St USA in Wilmington - excluding people in our party I must have seen 8 people from Stoneham taking their kids for activities at this multi-use kids facility. It would be great to bring in something like that, plus maybe an upscale pub in Stoneham Center & some refurbishment @ munchin park and you would see families spending more time & money in Stoneham (as well as attract others from other towns).

I agree that a Trader Joe's would be a great addition to Stoneham. The nearest ones are in Cambridge and Saugus, so Redstone would be nicely situated and convenient for customers. Panera Bread would also be a good choice. Slipping in a Starbucks would be great as well. Even just a small one!

There are some great ideas posted here! Go to the Selectmen's meetings and voice these ideas to the town leadership that you as a registerd voter and Stoneham tax payer voted into office. If the selectmen do not hear from us, they will not know how we want or what we want for changes in this town. Start by attending the special town meeting this coming Tuesday, Sept. 3rd. Then mark your calenders for the Selectmen's meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10 and the regular town meeting on Monday, Oct. 21. Make your ideas and voices known!

IMHO, Shaws put Shaws out of business with its selection and prices. Have lived in area since 2000 and the Shaws there was never that busy whenever I was in it. Agree that TJ's would be perfect (but don't forget about the TJ's in Burlington, too, as well as Saugus). Michael's already is in Saugus, as is AC Moore, and there is AC Moore in Woburn and Michael's in Burlington - can't see the need for another.

Just wish we had some class A stores in town. Currently there is not a draw to attract better businesses to our community. Can you imagine what it will be like once the new development is finished in Lynnfield. That will be quite an incentive to go to that community. Meanwhile we are slowly becoming ghost town for commercial ventures. i can remember when we had a beautiful children's clothing store in town that drew customers from all over. We need a marketing planner to bring them in.
Matt Helm September 03, 2013 at 08:26 AM
Arts and crafts store?? Trader Joes??? How's about a real nice upscale gentlemen's club?? With a ring for jello and whip creme wrestling, a ten-pole stage...oh...and a cigar lounge too....now that's an idea that got my attention..... And once we get gambling... SLOTS!!!!! yeah baby!!!
C September 08, 2013 at 08:15 PM
Well - this past week I have shopped in Wakefield, Melrose, Reading and the BEAUTIFUL new shops in Lynnfield. Hmmmm....did I mention Stoneham ? NOPE-- because we have nothing here!!! Please take a walk through Lynnfield's new shops. Yes, it is HUGE compared to Redstone, but there is NO reason Redstone needs to STILL, years later, look as it does. SAD TOWN! My fear is that it will just continue to diminish daily. And yes -- can we please get something to get the teens in this town to do something other than cross 28 and hang in the parking lot of BK and DD's ???

The issue is, yet again, the missing position of Town Planner reporting to the Board of Selectmen/Selectwoman. This would provide the expertise (if you hire a professional - translation : Pay them appropriately, this is not a no 'show position'). It would also ensure that the responsibility for development in Stoneham is clearly defined.
Russ September 10, 2013 at 10:13 AM
Patricia, Astute commentary ... thanks. What are Mr. Fleming's thoughts on why Redstone hasn't been fully and effectively marketed? His viewpoint would be most valuable and it would point to the changes needed here in town to ensure timely development efforts. We need solutions, not excuses, from all parties.
Tara September 10, 2013 at 12:49 PM
I agree - Stoneham needs a town planner. If you look at the surrounding towns w/ plazas with Burton Grill or some nice upscale restaurants and stores Nordstrom Rack, etc. It makes for a nice place to hang out, shop. I thought I had "heard" Dave & Busters is going in Woburn where the logan express was by Sea Dog? not sure if that is true
Grace McManus September 12, 2013 at 07:56 AM
I agree with Russ about a planner. This Town has NEVER hired a planner. It has always been grant writer/planner ( Note the order). As for Redstone, it is well past the time that the Town officials start taxing the unused portion of Redstone, then, start checking it for code and making it more viable for the development company to fill the slots. Yes, I would love an Off the Rack! If we want a large store, how about ChristmasTree Shop? A TJ or Roche Bro or WCIGAMs would be wonderful. Just over line in Reading they are building about 300 middle to upper priced condos. Do you think Redstone could take advantage of the new neighbors????
C September 12, 2013 at 03:19 PM
WHY would Redstone take advantage of its new neighbors when it doesn't even take care of its own residents ! UGH! AND what happened to our Farmer's Market ???? We don't even have that anymore ??? WHY ? We must seriously be the ONLY town without a Farmers Market~! Again......just plain old SAD !

Mr. Schmel, It appears you accidently (I am assuming its accidently since you don't know us) listed our cell phone number when you registered for an online promotion (possibly a target gift card). We have received 100's of phone calls from a variety of telemarketers asking for you. They even went so far as giving us the street address listed in their system and the spelling of your name. I am hoping you are the gentleman that lives on main st. If so, could you please see if you can back peddle and get our information removed? Thank you.

Pantera's....Trader Joe or any upscale gift shop, tea shop....we have no local place to fo for a sandwich and coffee that is a pleasant environment. You have many condos in town and yet we leave Stoneham to shop and lunch. Love the new restaurant Tulip but need something else. This town needs more than one super market. Would love Trader Joe's. Something is very long when SO many stores are vacant for so long.
Linda Rossetti Mello December 04, 2013 at 06:12 PM
It would be great if they put a Chunky's in the old Shaws building
Samantha Saladino-Terrio February 10, 2014 at 09:04 AM
I completely agree that we need some new trendier places to shop/eat. On a daily basis I leave stoneham to go to Starbucks, whole foods, market basket etc. There is nothing here to draw consumers in from other communities
