Considering I grew up not far from a town with a drug-related death statistic upwards of four times the national average I'd say Stoneham is super safe. I'd love to see more community programs in our area (Stoneham, Woburn, Reading, Wakefield, Melrose, etc...) aimed at reducing recreational drug use, particularly in the young people. I work with families in my holistic center to provide alternatives to coping with stress (school, sports, social, etc...). You'd be surprised how many teens I've seen use aromatherapy and reflexology treatments to cut nicotine and marijuana habits.

Mark - I agree with you regarding the drugs that are in the Stoneham schools. I hear the same thing. However, even though your child is in another school - even if it is a nice private school, do not delude yourself into thinking drugs are not there either. They are.

Do I feel safe in this town? Sometimes yes and sometimes no. Today was definitely not one of those days. When a candidate running for office is physically assaulted, has his signs smashed and broken and thrown onto Main Street in the middle of busy Saturday traffic... then our own police refuse to arrest the "alleged" assaulter because they did not witness the event... the answer is "no" - I do not feel safer today. And on top of that, I am a bit saddened too.

Today was a sad day. As I bring my children down to hold signs for a candidate for a better Stoneham, and a man assaults him in front of us for a better Stonaham. Where do I live??? I Stand here totally invested in Tom Boussy for Selectman. Good God! where do people come from. Tom Boussy is my guy for the right reasons especially after today? I'm proud to be a supporter.

The physical assault on a candidate was at the least unfortunate. I mis-wrote when I typed above that the police refused to arrest the alleged assaulter. From what I hear, by law they cannot do so. And if anything, it still makes things feel "less safe".
