Community Corner

Elections over please unite

The elections are over and the signs will slowly be removed from neighbor’s front lawns.  One sign remains, the red and white sign  “Take Action Help Stop a project too Big For Stoneham”.  We as a community must put aside any differences we had at election time and band together to let our officials know our concerns about the Weiss Farm project.

We are all affected by the acute problems such a development will create.  Several articles have been written in the past about the density of population on Franklin Street, the safety of our school children at Stoneham High School and neighboring schools in the area.  Mention has been made of the increased traffic burden we will face if constructed.  It is highly likely there will be increased fire and police calls in this geographic area due to the magnitude of this housing development.  We have stated in the past the possibility of our water supply being contaminated, flooding and severe soil erosion.

All of us must keep a watchful eye on what Mass. Housing decides regarding the comprehensive permit and that all town officials keep abreast of how to best serve the granting authority in town, the Board of Appeals and our community.

It is a shame that less than 25% of the voting population of Stoneham voted in this election.  The Commons at Weiss Farm will affect 100% of our town.  It is vital that all of us be heard and is involved in how our community prospers.
