NAGE/IBPO/SEIU Local 5000 Endorses Katherine Clark for Congress

22,000 Massachusetts workers pledge campaign support

The second major labor union in as many days has endorsed State Senator Katherine Clark for Congress in the Fifth District of Massachusetts. NAGE/IBPO/SEIU Local 5000, representing 22,000 workers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, today announced its support for State Senator Katherine Clark in the special election to be held later this year.

“Katherine has always had an open door policy. She listens to what we have to say and is always responsive,” said Ray McGrath, Political Director of NAGE/IBPO/SEIU Local 5000. “What we want in a Congressman is exactly that: someone who listens, but more importantly someone who is open to our point of view.”

“I am thrilled to have the support of NAGE/IBPO/SEIU Local 5000,” said Clark. She added, “I have been proud to work with them on issues of workplace safety and creating workplaces free of bullying and harassment. The workers of NAGE understand firsthand that when extremists in Washington try to distract our attention with bills designed to take away women’s rights to make their own healthcare decisions or by obstructing everything President Obama is trying to accomplish, they are failing to focus on the real issues that affect our families and our communities. I will always stand up to these extremists and with the families of Massachusetts, and I’m glad to know the 22,000 Massachusetts workers of NAGE will stand with me.”

Katherine Clark’s priority is making sure that our voices are heard in Washington-- a place that, these days, is dysfunctional and distracted from what matters to us. Katherine has successfully fought to create jobs, open the books on the state’s finances to the public, fund our public schools equitably, and combat bullying and domestic violence. She’s taken on the NRA and stopped them from expanding a concealed weapons law. Katherine fights every day for women’s access to basic healthcare, birth control, family planning and cancer screenings.

Katherine has already been endorsed in her race for Congress by the Women’s Campaign Fund, Teamsters Local 25 and has been placed “On The List” by EMILY’s List. Katherine was sworn in for her second term as a Massachusetts State Senator representing Malden, Melrose, Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield and Winchester on January 2, 2013. She was first elected in March 2008 to the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Senator Clark serves as the Chair of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary and Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse. She also serves on the Joint Committees on Public Health and Public Safety and Homeland Security. Senator Clark is a member of the Advisory Council for the Department of Early Education and Care. In 2011, Senator Clark was appointed to the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy Advisory Board at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
