Ceremony to Honor 9 Mystery Veterans Set for Monday

Veteran’s Day is Monday, November 11, and the Town of Stoneham has a special and unique reason to celebrate. While cleaning out a filing cabinet in the Veteran’s Service office, Jim Devlin and an aid found a box with nine medals of service for soldiers from Stoneham.

“This was really an accidental discovery,” Devlin said. “We want to acknowledge what the medals are and who they are for.” The Veteran’s Service office will honor these men with a plaque and a display case for the medals.

The names of the honored soldiers are Howard Barnes, William Cronin, Howie Elsworth, Hollis Nelson, Charles Prescott, Paul Schlichting, Charles Sherborn, Edward Zaun and Oscar Zaun.

“All we have is their names,” Devlin said. “No serial numbers, Social Security numbers, discharge papers or history on them.”

The ceremony will take place out front of the Town Hall at 10:30 a.m..
