Because Seniors Deserve Our Respect

Cross-posted from the Growing Stoneham blog: http://growingstoneham.wordpress.com/2014/03/22/because-seniors-deserve-our-respect/

As a community, we must ensure that our seniors have the resources they need. We owe them a great deal of gratitude because they supported us so well during their working years. Therefore, one of my main goals when I ran for Selectman last year was to focus on our seniors. I remain committed to that goal:

*First, we need to remove the tax burden from our seniors. One way we will achieve this is by attracting new, compatible businesses to Stoneham, which in turn will increase our tax base.

*Last year I successfully lobbied for funding to the Senior Center for a part-time janitor and driver. This year I am lobbying to increase funding for the Senior Center to pay for much needed part-time support personnel.

*Currently working with the Finance Committee to study the funding fairness on behalf of our Senior Center. Our seniors represent 25% of our population, and our center is funded 25% LESS than comparable Senior Centers in the area. This must change!

*Designated the Senior Center as recipients of money bequeath to Stoneham, and further established a fund to help seniors pay for eyeglasses.

*Created inter-generational events, promoting the arts and music between seniors and children. Developed community events, bridging two valued groups who rarely have the privilege of working together. Installed a permanent display at Town Hall to highlight art created by Seniors.
