Winchester Hospital, which serves patients from Stoneham and other neighboring communities, recently expanded its operation by opening a new outpatient center in Woburn.

"As proud of the technology as we are you will see something today that's been part of Winchester Hospital since right from our very beginnings, our roots 100 years ago which is health care really at its roots is a business organization of people taking care of people," said Kevin Smith, president and CEO of Winchester Hospital, during a tour at the new facility in Woburn on Tuesday.

The facility, located at 200 Unicorn Park Dr. near the Woburn-Stoneham line, provides an array of medical options to its patients, including imaging services, specimen collection, Breast Care Center and the Center for Healthy Living. The four-level building is 75,000 sq. ft; however, about 38,000 sq. ft. and the first, third and fourth floors are dedicated to Winchester Hospital while the remaining space is used by Excel Orthopaedic Specialists, according to hospital staff.

The facility, which opened its doors to customers in June, is one of the hospital's 20 clinical locations in the region. Some of the other offices are located in Wilmington, Winchester, Woburn and Medford.

High-Tech Equipment

Among the state-of-the-art equipment provided at the center is a 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanning unit, digit X-ray and fluoroscopy for joint injections and arthrograms, according to hospital staff.

"(The CT) allows folks to come into the imaging center to have their procedure done in a matter of minutes," said Judith Bucci, a radiology manager for the hospital. Bucci said the center has a C-arm, radiographic digital room and two magnets — Siemens 1.5T and 3T magnets.

"We are thrilled with the new imaging service at Unicorn Park," said Robert Fortunato, MD, the hospital's chief of radiology in a press statement. "It allows us to provide the best diagnostics for our patients along with an outstanding service."

Breast Care Center

The Breast Care Center offers various services, including digital mammography, breast ultrasounds, consultation services and oncologists and radiation oncologists, according to hospital staff. While doctors perform invasive breast care services, decorative stained glass has been installed above examination tables to try and put patients' minds at ease during a procedure or examination.

"Women travel great distances to come to our Breast Care Center because they know they will receive comprehensive and superior care in a compassionate and supportive environment," said Delphine Lui, MD, associate medical imagining director for the Breast Care Center.

Healthy Living Center

The Center of Healthy Living, which first opened in 1996 as the Community Health Institute at the hospital, recently moved to Suite 401 at the new facility in Woburn, according to Winchester Hospital's Summer 2013 edition of "Advancing Health, Advancing Care." The center provides more than 30 programs and services to the community, the publication notes.

Patient Specimen Collection Site

The patient specimen collection site can be found on the first floor and is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
