Boys & Girls Club Eyes Late 2012 Start

New Boys & Girls Club being established in Wakefield by the Stoneham club.

Toward the end of 2012, young people in and around Wakefield will have a new resource for fun, education and health.

The Boys & Girls Club is currently taking shape in Wakefield and will open as a satellite of the current Stoneham club, which marks its 40th anniversary this month. The Wakefield club will be located on the lower floor of the Americal Civic Center on Main Street, not far from downtown and the Galvin Middle School.

"The heavy focus is going to be on education and health and fitness," said Stoneham club director Gerry Deviller in a recent conversation with Wakefield Patch. Deviller is also a Wakefield resident. "Our goal is to be running programs by the end of 2012."

The club serves young people aged 7-18 from any community. Fees are $25 for a school year.

Some of the activities Wakefield can expect include the club's "Triple Play" health and wellness program, as well as the "Power Hour" homework group and other games, activities and programs. At times during the week, the drill hall at the Civic Center is also likely to be used for basketball, floor hockey, and other sports.

Looking ahead, the club expects to add some computers or other technology features to its Wakefield location. For example, the Stoneham club is home to a computer room where kids can go do their homework or work on other skills. Deviller also noted that during the summer months, Wakefield will offer a 10-week drop-in program, while the existing club summer camp program will remain in Stoneham. With all these things in mind, from the club's location to its offerings, Deviller predicts it will be "busy for sure" in Wakefield.

Deviller also indicated that the club is planning an open house in Wakefield in the very near future. "Opening a new club in Wakefield, it's huge news," he added.

I think this is great. It's nice to have something for the kids to do after school. It's a place to keep them safe and off the streets.
