From my last essay on the mind-body connection, I wrote:

“What you think determines what your body does in the form of action.”

Within martial arts, as you study your physical body, you are inevitably studying your mental strengths and weaknesses.

The introspective individual will examine more deeply  who they are, where they have been, why they have made the choices they have made, and why they are where they are in life.  They will ask what is important to them and how badly do they want what they desire.

Many people have made decades of choices based on a simple formula of what’s going to be easy or what’s going to be hard, or what’s going to be painful or what’s going to feel good.  Often they make a major life choice only after being tired of being in a painful place long enough.

A more enlightened individual will understand that their past doesn’t have to determine their future.  That person will need the mental strength including willpower, confidence, patience, discipline and determination to take the physical actions to change their life trajectory.

Students can see physical changes very quickly over a short period of time.  The trick is to maintain the importance of what they are doing and where they are going in life.  Most people get derailed after one or two setbacks.

When you are climbing a mountain, the challenges are many, but the further you can see about the world.  This principle is the same the more you immerse yourself in any endeavor.

The taller the mountain, the more help and guidance you will need along the way whether from others who’ve gone ahead or from the ones you are leading behind you.

What mountains are you trying to climb and do you see yourself getting to the top?
