"The Healer’s Art is predicated on the idea that medicine is an ancient lineage that draws its strength from its core values: compassion, service, reverence for life and harmlessness. When students and doctors connect to these values in a community, they derive meaning and strength, and can “immunize” themselves against the assaults of the medical curriculum and even the health care system itself."

As a professional martial arts instructor, I see as one of the major themes in David Bornstein's opinion is how doctors and, by extension, we, need reminders on what it means to be human and how to treat each other humanely.

It is being able to find and know what things are deeply meaningful to us individually, that provides the compass for our actions, whether as physicians or in any walk of life.

Most people do not have anyone in their everyday life who deliberately and consciously reminds them to pay attention to their humanity, much less to what is deeply meaningful.  Most times, this is a long discovery process that needs life-long companions for guidance.

Individuals are out there who can help us.  Oftentimes, it is easiest to find in a student/teacher or a mentor/mentee relationship.  We each hopefully can see them and, even better, rely upon them for guidance and strength.

Kind regards,
