Halloween Weekends: Haunted Tours, Pumpkin Festivals and More

Looking for Halloween and autumn events this weekend? Check out this roundup of things to do across Massachusetts this Friday through Sunday.

This is Halloween! Tis the season when happy haunts begin to materialize and grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize. Of course there's plenty to do in Salem, the Halloween Capital of the World, but there's plenty of local events happening, too.

Here's a roundup of local Halloween and autumnal events taking place this Friday, Oct. 5, Saturday, Oct. 6 and Sunday, Oct. 7. Be sure to check out Stoneham Patch's Halloween Guide for everything Halloween-related in town.

SALEM

1st Annual Pickering Wharf Pet Costume Contest: Grand prizes include a $25 gift certificate to The Hungry Whale and an Entire Day at the spa located at Living With Pets. All pets and pet owners that participate will receive a fun pumpkin ornament/decoration that will be filled with delicious dog treats to take home. Friday Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. Free.

Scary Mary's Haunted Harbor: Live Concert and Launch Party: A Halloween hootenanny featuring a variety of music, comedy and drag acts leading up to the musical debut concert of Scary Mary and the Audio Corsette. Dead Man's Dance Party to follow. Light hors d'oeuvres included with cash bar. Sunday, Oct. 7 at 8 p.m. $15 in advance, $25 for VIP ticket that includes CinemaSalem show admission.

WINCHESTER

Mahoney's Haunted Maze: Mahoney's Garden Center has gone all out with their maze this year, building it in a huge 50-by-90 tent compete with fog, sound effects and animated creatures of the night. Note that the maze has some decorations that might feel scary to very young children: they should enter accompanied by an adult. While at Mahoney's, check out all the pumpkins, pumpkin carving kits, fall mums, cornstalks, hay, and Halloween décor. Daily through Halloween, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Free.

SOMERVILLE

'Ghosts of Boston: Haunts of the Hub' Book Signing and Ghost Walk: Whether you're a believer in the 'Boo!' business or just an amused skeptic, journalist Sam Baltrusis navigates more than three-hundred years of the Somerville and Boston's haunted history and uncovers a few skeletons in our collective closet in his new book Ghosts of Boston: Haunts of the Hub. The author is planning a post-event ghost walk to haunted locales in Somerville.Saturday, Oct. 6, Noon-1:30 p.m.

CAMBRIDGE

Haunted Harvard Square Ghost Tour: Explore the secrets of old Cambridge with a lantern-led walk through Harvard Square's historic haunts. Travel back through history to witness the early days of Harvard Yard, learn about the city's ghastly tales of murder and uncover the truth behind some of Harvard Square's more infamous ghosts. Which Ivy League hall is the Yard's most haunted? Who is Holbrook Smith? Which Harvard Square church boasts a ghost of a fallen redcoat? What is the Nightmare on Kirkland Street? Friday, Oct. 5, Saturday Oct. 6 and Sunday Oct. 7. 90-minute tour leaves at 7 p.m.

TEWKSBURY

Krochmal Farm's Annual Pumpkin Fest: Before deciding on your choice pumpkin, enjoy a hayride through the scenic New England Farm and let the children feel the thrill of their first pony ride. Learn to be a kid again yourself while you lose your adult-self in a fantastic Corn Maze and watch the amazement of all in the interactive animal exhibit. Save enough time to enjoy a warm meal with your family and friends and to enjoy the craft tables to take home a memento from a fun-filled day. Saturday, Oct. 6 through Monday, Oct. 8 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free.

WEYMOUTH

Great Pumpkin Give-a-Wey: The community event includes a pie eating contest, a chowder contest between Weymouth’s finest restaurants, and live music and and a DJ. Children will enjoy horse drawn hayrides, pony rides and the aquatic sea creatures from the NE Aquarium Traveling. They can also take a ride on the roaming railroads with their family and eat at the Food Court and shop for produce, baked goods and crafts at the Weymouth Farmers Market which will be located on Libby Field for the day. Saturday, Oct. 6 from 12-4 p.m.

FALMOUTH

Psychic Fair: Featuring Tarot readers, mediums, angel readers, aura photos, psychometrists, astrologers, healers, Reiki, massage and Shamballa. Vendors selling gem stones, holistic products, jewelry, spiritual and magical gifts. Food and drinks available. All funds to benefit Waquoit Nursery School. Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. $2 admission donation.
