Stoneham Public Schools are on winter vacation this week, and by mid-week parents might be hearing, "But there isn't anything to doooo."
Patch is here to help. Here are some events happening in and around Stoneham this week to get kids out of the house:
Play the Animal Way at Stone Zoo
WHEN: Each day from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
WHAT: Watch cougars, black bears and others have fun in the cold, and learn about neat animal adaptations to the winter temperatures. Just like you, animals can get bored when they’re cooped up all winter, so Stone Zoo has come up with novel enrichment activities to keep them stimulated and happy Come and see all the creative things we do for our animals, and learn how we keep them active and engaged throughout the winter using enrichment techniques. There will also be crafts and storytelling for guests to enjoy. See the full schedule of daily activities.
COST: Adults $14.00, children (ages 2-12) $10.00, Seniors $12.00. Children under age 2 are free.
Kids Climbing Programs at Boston Rock Gym
WHEN: Monday, Feb. 18 through Friday, Feb. 22, sessions at 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 1-3 p.m., 3:30-5:30 p.m.
WHAT: The BRG is offering two extra Kids' Climb classes from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1-3 p.m., (in addition to the regularly scheduled 3:30-5:30 p.m. Kids' Climb). When children are climbing it is just them and the wall, and they will develop valuable life skills and learn to overcome fear and stress. Experienced Rock Gym Instructors are available to belay your child and encourage them to challenge themselves in a supportive, non-competitive environment.
COST: $25 per session.
Nature on Vacation in the Middlesex Fells
WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 20, Thursday, Feb. 21, and Friday, Feb. 22, Noon to 1 p.m. each day.
WHAT: Bring your children for easy environmental walks with a different theme each day. Indoor activities will be offered if the weather is stormy or icy. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
WHAT: Students will learn the process that goes into casting their own masks in latex, following which each will have a chance to decorate, personalize, and keep their own. This day-long workshop starts with planning and design before progressing to execution built around simple rubber masks.
Snowman Building Contest
WHEN: Wednesday, Feb. 20, 3-5 p.m. (Weather Permitting).
WHAT: This contest is open to all Melrose residents, but anyone can view the snowmen being built on Wednesday during the live contest.
