Congressman leads Gabriel Gomez by 17 points.
A new Suffolk University/7NEWS (WHDH) poll shows a strong lead for Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey over Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez in the race for the U.S. Senate special election. The poll of 500 likely voters has Markey at 52 percent and Gomez at 35 percent. Eleven percent of voters in the poll were undecided. A third-party candidate, Richard Heos of the Twelve Visions Party, got 1 percent and another 1 percent refused to respond. David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center in Boston, said along with the announcement of the poll that Markey has "a large lead over his Republican opponent who voters are unsure about." It's official. It will be a two-person race to fill Selectman Richard Gregorio's seat in the upcoming June 25 election. The candidates vying to complete Gregorio's term will be Paul Rotondi and Ann Marie O'Neill. George Seibold and Lawrence Means also pulled papers from Town Hall, but did not return them by the deadline. To qualify to run for the interim nine-month position, potential contenders needed to be a Stoneham residents, pull nomination papers by 5 p.m., May 3, obtain 50 signatures from Stoneham residents supporting their campaign and return the entire package to the Town Clerk's office by 5 p.m., May 7. Potential candidates have until 5 p.m. Tuesday to return nomination papers.
The May 3 deadline has passed to obtain nomination papers for the seat on the town's Board of Selectmen being vacated by Richard Gregorio, effective April 30. Four possible candidates pulled nomination papers to run in the June 25 election, but only one resident has returned their documents with the required signatures as of Monday. The vacant seat is due to the recent resignation of current two-term Selectman Richard Gregorio who is relocating and will no longer be a Stoneham resident. The position is due to expire in 2014. His replacement will hold the title for the duration of his term (nine months) and will have to run again at the town election, in April 2014, to serve for a full three-year term. After months of campaigning we now know who is going head to head in the June 25 special U.S. Senate election. Democratic Congressman Edward Markey (D-Malden) took the Democratic vote in the Tuesday election over fellow Congressman Stephen Lynch (D-South Boston). Political newcomer and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset came out on top of a field of Republican candidates - including more seasoned opponents former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan and State Rep. Dan Winslow of Norfolk. With a month and a half of campaigning still to come we wanted to stop and ask you this question. If the Special Election were today - who would you vote for right now? Stoneham voters remained consistent with state-wide primary results.
Stoneham residents voting in the Special State Primary Election Tuesday night followed the state trend. Edward Markey was the Democratic town favorite receiving 1,358 votes, with 1,255 going to Stephen Lynch. Following the state's lead on the republican side, Gabriel Gomez obtained more votes than his two opponents combined with 370, with Michael Sullivan following with 288 and Daniel Winslow collecting 79 votes. On the democratic side, there were seven write-ins, while the republican primary had four write-in votes. Markey, a longtime congressman and Gomez, a former U.S. Navy seal, will now face off on June 25 to fill the U.S. Senate seat recently vacated by Senator John Kerry, now the U. S. Secretary of State.

A political newcomer will face a long-time Massachusetts politician in the race to be the Bay State's next U.S. senator. The Associated Press has declared Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Gabriel Gomez of Cohasset and Democratic U.S. Congressman Edward Markey of Malden the winners of their U.S. Senate special primary elections, according to tweets from Fox 25. The call for Gomez came approximately one hour after the polls closed in the statewide primary while a call for Markey came moments later.
