Young and not-so-young readers gathered at the Stoneham Theatre Wednesday to learn about wallabies through the entertaining story "Willow's Walkabout: A Children's Guide to Boston" by Sheila Cunningham.
Willow's story is based on the real-life escape of a young wallaby named Aardu. Aardu got out of his enclosure at the Stone Zoo in the mid-1990s and spent almost two weeks on the lam before returning on his own. The adventure even made national news.
The wallaby in Ms. Cunningham's book also leaves the Stone Zoo for an adventure around Boston. She keeps a notebook in her pouch and records her daily sightseeing stops at all the great Boston landmarks, including Fenway Park, the Children's Museum and the Freedom Trail.
Willow herself even made an appearance!
There are a few more signed copies left at The Book Oasis if you missed the event.
