This spring the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham offered "Weather Wise," a new program which aimed to teach members about how to predict and forecast the weather. This program, instructed by Scott Frasier, met weekly to cover a variety of weather-related topics.
It was great to see the Weather Wise students excited each Friday to learn the science behind the atmosphere. Some topics covered included temperature, air pressure, thunderstorms, lightning, tornadoes and precipitation. This course did an excellent job of mixing learning the core concepts of meteorology with engaging hands-on activities. In addition, Weather Wise made use of the club’s Technology Center where they were able to make use of modern digital weather forecasting tools and observe weather change and storms in real-time.
The last portion of the program focused on the skills needed to forecast weather on television. Members practiced their forecasting skills for weeks, and then were provided the opportunity to forecast the weekend forecast on Stoneham TV.
Recently, these members were invited to the Channel 5 Studio in Needham to meet meteorologist David Brown. During this visit, the Weather Wise students were able to see how the news is broadcast first hand and received a detailed tour of the Channel 5 Studio. It was clear at the end of this trip that all of the participating members were genuinely excited about learning weather.
Next year the Boys & Girls Club of Stoneham will be offering Weather Wise again. Make sure to check for updates on this program on the club’s website in the fall.
