Readers Call For Market Basket, Christmas Tree Shop to Open in Stoneham

Readers called for these two stores the most in our poll.

After asking what business should set up shop in Stoneham, two choices topped the list of suggestions from our readers: Market Basket and the Christmas Tree Shop.

Of the 42 votes we received, Market Basket and the Christmas Tree Shop finished tied for first with five votes each, followed by a movie theater with three and a grocery store, Ikea, Walmart, Target and Starbucks finishing third with two votes apiece.

With limited grocery store options in Stoneham, readers want a place like Market Basket to open in town.

"MARKET BASKET! For the love of Mary someone needs to occupy the former Shaw's location and Market Basket would be IDEAL!" wrote reader Jillian. Reader Witold added: "I agree about the Market Basket. Those local businesses near Redstone (Shopping Center) would appreciate the additional traffic."

Aside from a grocery store, readers also called for a retail outfit that offers products to improve your home's decor like a Christmas Tree Shop. Reader Jerry wrote in, saying, "I agree that a new grocery store in the Shaw's site would be great, and a Christmas Tree Shop even better."

While there hasn't been a movie theater in Stoneham for quite some time, readers expressed their interest in having one in the community again.

"A movie theater in where Shaw's was, and even a second-run would be incredible!" wrote reader C. "Teenagers need somewhere to go to hang out other than going to Woburn or Saugus."

Another grocery store. It would be nice to have another option besides Stop and Shop. Too many long lines because they never seem to have anyone working the registers and for god's sake can they get a carriage corral there?

Whole Foods will be opening in 18 months in Lynnfield so I doubt they will come here. Good suggestion! How about Trader Joe's?

A bakery that bakes bread and other goods from basic ingredients, without artificial colors and flavors in the bases. A cinema drafthouse would be awesome. I think our region could really use a swim school, like Foss. A BAR!! Microbrews on tap, good old fashioned cocktails.

C and Ryan: There was a theatre on the spot where Shaws was.It was knocked down about 25+ years ago to build the Shaws and liquor store. At one time there was a Star Market in that complex also.I'll bet an indoor race track like Formula 1 in Boston would be a success. How about an indoor driving range?

Dave and Busters! Woburn where the dealership was torn down would be a nice spot since we'd never see it in Redstone. It's nice to dream though.

I know that Stoneham has several pizza shops but I would go out of my way for a Pizza Hut! Papa Gino's just doesn't do it for me. I'd also love to see Market Basket open at Redstone if Shaw's can't come back. I agree with Barry Cassell's comment about another supermarket besides Stop and Shop. If Comically Speaking could move from Reading Square to Redstone that would be sweet--if not, then I'd like to see either Newbury Comics, Hot Topic or Spencer Gifts. I like Target but I don't think there's enough space at Redstone for it (judging from how huge the Target store in Woburn is). Other suggestions: Panera Bread, Quiznos and the hard-to-find Red Lobster (I am always seeing TV ads for it but there are none around!).

Barnes and Noble would hardly help my business! We need more unique businesses that don't already have locations just a few miles from Stoneham. The businesses need to draw shoppers into Stoneham and make it a destination town, without putting an existing shop out of business. The loss of the Natural Food store to Reading was a big one, we need more one-of-a-kind shops like that. Yes, competition is good, but Stoneham is too small to have competing furniture stores, book stores or the like. Newbury Comics is a great suggestion, as is the second-run theatre. How about an arcade, billiard hall, batting cage, go-carts type enterprise with lots of activities for summer, rainy days, long winters?? One big facility with a variety of activities would be golden.

Market Basket and or Traders Joe. Stop a and Shop way too expensive. Then I think S&S would go under and then any of the other suggestions. could take their place. In this economy, consumers should not have to pay at least double for the exact products.

A market basket there would be, what, less than 3 miles from the Woburn and Reading Market Baskets? I assume any person with a vehicle would just blow off the overpriced S&S and head to Reading. I just don't see MB going into the Shaws site. .Then again Market Basket felt free to plop itself about 100 feet from the Stop & Shop in Reading.
Too many of the other suggestions, e.g., Barnes & Noble and Newbury Comics, are for stores whose primary products are suffering stiff online competition & competition from new technologies; I just don't see those expanding. Sure, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Ocean State Job Lot are expanding in the area, but I don't view any of these businesses going into the area as a positive sign. I think a Bed Bath and Beyond would be a decent bet (I still miss the old Kitchen etc) -- the nearest one is 7 miles away in Burlington or 10 miles away in Danvers. Old Navy also; nearest ones are Sq one mall in Saugus (about 5 miles?), Burlington (7 miles), Everett (8 miles?), and Danvers (10 miles?).

Why not stay away from retail stores & think about a Mass General Hospital or Lahey clinic. Stay away from places our kids will hang out at. Don't breed potential gang or drug related problems in our town.

Traffic is bad enough on Rt 28 let's not add more. Our auto insurance premiums are based on the number of incidents in Stoneham. Why add personal costs to our every day lives.

Kids need a place in Stoneham to go to. THere arent many kid friendly businesses and things for kids to do in stoneham - traffic is bad anywhere. The redstone plaza is a good location right off the highway people dont really need to go to far through stoneham to get to it.

Stoneham kids need a place to do things instead of cause mischief in town

And a bowling alley wouldnt be just kids, seniors nearby and adults use bowling alleys too - Tom you're probably one of those NIMBYs who are against everything that ever comes into town. You're probably against the tri community bike path too. wouldnt' be surprised

if half the people who were millionaires or even hundred thousandaires - gave a small amount a few thousand to the town half the towns wouldnt have their budget issues. the problem is everyone esp the rich people expect that everything be handed to them on a silver platter and they dont care about the town itself

My town in Winchester is hurting financially - yet we have over half the town with multi million dollar houses or at least $700,.000+ you pretty much have to be close to a millionaire or at least over $50.000 a year to live in Winchester. People here in Stoneham and Winchester Have money Why dont they start giving some back to the towns instead of let the towns go bankrupt slowly. If people would donate some money to help pay for projects like a new high school, bike path, or store project it would help ease the burden on the towns. Yet people just expect everything to be handed to them without a cost to them. And B*tch every time a new project comes in. Nimbys need to go away the kids need a place to play and such instead of hanging out in makeshift skate parks throughout the towns. - and causing trouble. An Arcade/Bowling alley would be great.

Well, I'm psyched about the Bed Bath & Beyond...but I wouldn't say "again"...back around 1999-2000 or so it was a Kitchen Etc in that spot, next to Ames. I cannot recall when it was ever BBB. There used to be a Linens n Things over in Reading where the Golf Warehouse is now -- the Linens n Things was there since that plaza opened around 2003/2004 or so, and closed around 2008/2009 think.
Good Luck to Bassett competing with Jordan's furniture just a couple of miles away.
I too wish for a Trader Joe's in that spot, but I've read here that other's have said Trader Joes feels its Burlington, Peabody & Saugus stores are close enough that no store is needed in this spot. Personally, I think if Trader Joe's were there it would be one of its busiest...our area is grossly underserved in the natural/organic grocery market.

I agree, the kids in our town need a place to go. Many just walk the streets at night or hang around down the common. This doesn't lead to anything good happening. As previously mentioned, a small theatre, bowling alley and or arcade would be great for our kids and adults as well. An old fashioned eatery with basic burgers and shakes for example would be great for the kids. Why not offer a "sofa room" off the eatery with free WIFI so our kids could have a place to meet up after school and in the evenings to do their homework....

+1 on Chunky's. The town also needs a grocery choice other than MB or S&S. If you want to shop MB, drive your car practically an exit down 95 either way. Trader Joe's would be best but Hannaford isn't a bad choice. Although they are more expensive than MB, they are that way b/c they have a healthier selection.
