What Would You Ban in Stoneham?

A number of communities have deep-sixed some interesting items and activities over the past year, but should Natick join the banning bandwagon?

Concord’s so-called bottle ban became a bylaw last week, Brookline recently banned plastic bags and Styrofoam cups, and Arlington’s Town Meeting this fall upheld a seasonal leaf blower ban.

Meanwhile, home-cooked foods have been forced out of many schools, an ostensible attempt to protect against allergies and childhood obesity.

Stoneham hasn’t exactly hopped on this banning bandwagon, but should it?

Is there an activity or item you would want to see banned out of environmental, health or quality-of-life concerns? Let us know in the comments section below.

It isn't a ban necessarily, but I love that the litter-inducing magazine/advertisement boxes are gone! I'm all for banning cell phone use while driving and the noise pollution of drivers honking excessively (this is actually banned in WA state, and a fine-able offense).

I never heard of that honking law and had to look it up—a $124 fine! I'd be broke if I lived in Washington: http://www.seattlepi.com/local/article/Hold-that-honk-Car-horns-are-for-safety-only-1247702.php

We should ban people from rummaging through our recycling bins in the wee hours when we're trying to sleep.

How about a ban on winter parking bans? Is the existing one even enforced? It only makes sense when it's actually snowing. Or is it just to inconvenience law-abiding citizens with single-file parking?

Interesting you bring that up: winter parking bans have been on the retreat, so to speak, in the past year. Peabody eliminated its winter parking ban last May (http://peabody.patch.com/articles/bye-bye-winter-parking-ban) and, more recently, Danvers did the same (http://danvers.patch.com/articles/overnight-winter-parking-ban-lifted).

I would like to see a ban on using their Jake Brakes as they come off 128 onto Main St, South. A simple sign stating same would help.
Also, I would like to see the Speed Limit enforced on Main St. North & South between Redstone Shopping Center and North Street.

I don't mind them going through my rubbish. I just don't like it at 4:00 AM when I'm trying to sleep.

like anything else, a ban would only work if there was enforcement. Many town codes and laws, especially regarding traffic are not routinely enforced adequately. Crosswalks are not a safe place to be. Sidewalks are considered private parking spaces. Stop signs are just a suggestion. Speed limits are not routinely enforced. What makes you think a BAN on anything would make any difference?

I would like to see a "NO PARKING ZONE" BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 4:00 TO 6:00 PM IN THE SQUARE LOCATED BETWEEN FELICIA'S RESTUARANT/FRANKLIN STREET TO MONTVALE AVE.
THE TRAFFIC THAT IS CAUSED BY VEHICLES PARKING THERE DURING RUSH HOUR CREATES UNNECESSARY DELAYS. ESPECIALLY SINCE IT IS ONLY ONE LANE GOING IN EACH DIRECTION?

ON A DIFFERENT MATTER, I WOULD LIKE FOR THE TOWN OR DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION/RECREATION RETURN THE TRASH BARRELS OVER AT SPOT POND. FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON, THEY WERE REMOVED! THUS CAUSING MORE TRASH THROWN ON THE GROUND. IT IS NOT VERY APPEALING TO SEE TRASH THROWN ALL OVER THE PLACE.
