POLL RESULTS: Stoneham Middle School Project Backed by Readers

In a recent poll, our readers voted more than 3-to-1 in favor of the estimated $40 million Stoneham Middle School project.
Of the 57 votes cast, 41 votes (71 percent) backed the project, while 13 votes (22 percent) voted against it. Three votes (five percent) were unsure whether they supported or were against the project.
On our Facebook page, Stoneham resident Margaret Rose-Principato supported the project, saying, "Absolutely!!! Stoneham needed a new middle school when my oldest was there....SHE'S 30!!! It's about time!!!"
However, the project does have its detractors, as Stoneham residents Gina Sgarzi and Ralph Lauretano wrote on the Stoneham patch website "Vote no."
"I'm not comfortable with my kids going to school for two years at a construction site, on contaminated land," added Lauretano, referring to one of five environmental test borings done at the Central Elementary School site, where the Middle School addition is proposed to be built, that tested positive for arsenic. The School Building Committee voted on Jan. 30 to have Norwood-based environmental consulting firm Lord Associates, Inc. conduct peer reviews at the site.
The project will go before Stoneham voters at a Special Town Meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Town Hall Auditorium.
